What's in a name?

Post by Hank »

Hi there...

I appreciate finding a website that deals with MC like this. Having been Cat Scanned, Barium Enema-ed, and Biopsy-ed through various orifices, and having lived gluten free for several years I was glad to have a MC diagnosis. The idea of finding a group of folks who suffer as I do, is welcome as misery does love company. I am grateful to those who have come before to create this site.

My comment is this... Handicapped parking signs are becoming pictures of people in sports wheel chairs rather than the old pictures of invalids. People are starting to see themselves in terms of what they can do rather than what they can't do. The name Potty People is ...well depressing and not empowering. If you are on this website you have spent way too much time in the bathroom. We all need to live our lives and defining ourselves as potty people feels like it concedes defeat.

Thank you again for creating this resource.

Hi Hank!!

Welcome to our site. I'm sure you'll be reading and learning a lot, as most do when they find us. I've found this board to be a great help in managing this disease. You won't find a more caring group of people.

I wasn't a member of this board when they came up with that slogan or name, but I think they meant it to be humorous. I've never paid much attention to it, to be honest. Maybe others will weigh in on it.

Thank you Gloria. I hope in time I will find a combination of diet and medication that allows me to manage this illness. Maybe then I can see the humor in this.
Thanks again.

Welcome Hank,

I am sure you will find a lot of useful info trawling the past posts on this site and joining in our current discussions. I have learnt heaps from these folk.

I joined fairly recently, and I actually like the name. I find it gently amusing. It is the tendency to spend waaay to much time in the bathroom that is our common link, not the other aspects of our lives. Recognising this part of my life is very freeing to me - since the rest of society doesn't provide the same sort of feedback. To my mind, using pictos of sporting wheelies is discriminatory against those wheelies who are not athletically inclined.

It is all a matter of opinion I guess. I treat MC as an interesting project - a puzzle to solve. That helps limit my tendency to mope and gives it a positive spin. Thanks for raising the topic.

Hi Hank,

Just to give you a little hope, I'm one of the many people here who've managed to remain symptom free with diet alone for around five years now. Some are also on medication, at least for a while. Some don't seem to get completely symptom free no matter what they do, but in time, it seems that they can get things under control enough to be able to lead a pretty normal, productive life.

Guess it just comes in stages. For example, I moved up from being a Potty Person to being a Kitchen Person fairly rapidly! Ha! Maybe you'd rather imagine yourself in a chef's cap, cooking away at home!
There are many positives that can come out of having this diagnosis, believe it or not!

Read all you can here and on Dr. Fine's site, if you've not done so already.
Best wishes on your road to recovery!

Glad you found us here and I hope you can find some good information which will help you feel better about yourself and the world around you.

The name doesn't bother me at all. I'm not overly concerned with labels and find the name pretty humorous. I think it's healthy to be able to laugh at yourself.

I hope you will feel better about it after your condition has improved and I'm sure it will if you work hard at finding the answers that work for you. There are some people here who are really struggling but they keep trying to find the right path for them. Eventually, I'm sure they will.

Welcome to our group.
