Guess I was curious...2 bites is all I had... well it took about 20 minutes for my whole intestinal tract to start gurgling. The kind that's audible to those around you and they think your tummy's growling. I had forgotten all about the gurgling. About 10 minutes later, the d started and I've made many trips since. I'm gassy and it's the kind you can't trust. I'm not experiencing Polly's definition of happiness!
But it shows me how far I've come, how much better life is on a gf diet. I hope it doesn't take too long to get back to my new wonderful normal! I got to thinking I guess I've never asked...Once you have MC, you always have it? Tex??

Wow! You're a lot bolder than I am. I've been GF for almost 7 years, and there's no way that I would have the nerve to do that. :shock: I can understand how curiosity can make us wonder if we really need to continue a treatment, though. I'm going to post a new topic, about an "experiment" that I recently did with my thyroid treatment.

To answer your question, there are old research articles, that claim that MC resolves, in most cases, on it's own, within roughly 3 years or so.

There are doctors who claim that MC resolves in most patients, in about 5 years, though they add that some cases can take as long as 20 years to resolve. It's difficult to assess how they reached that conclusion, since MC was first described only a little over 30 years ago, and I'm not aware of any long-term studies of even 10-year duration.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of us on this site, have discovered that we seem to be exceptions to those claims, as we still react, as soon as we either discontinue our maintenance dose of the med we are using, or deviate from our diet requirements, and some members have not even been able to achieve remission by the use of both meds and diet, in 3 years or more. IOW, statistically, very, very few of us seem to be lucky enough to not have to continue our treatments indefinitely.

I'm still paying for it. I was up in the night , had tummy cramps and have made many trips to the bathroom today. Again - I'm thankful for the experience to know without a doubt that gf is the way to go and that I've been able to control symptoms with diet alone. It took about a year, but I'm so thankful. Happy Easter everybody!

What has been your experience with diet to achieve remission? What do you eat and did you start out with that diet.

Sorry you still can't eat gluten, but am so glad you have reached remission with diet alone! That is fantastic! Congratulations!

Hi Pat,
Mine's a long story like most everyone elses. Lots of trials on meds. but I don't do meds well, so I knew I had to do diet. It's taken about a year to not wake up to my bowels instead of the alarm clock. The gurgling, bloating, cramping, near misses are all gone. I didn't go through with the lab testing like lots of others here. I went with the best guesses of gluten and dairy and eliminated them altogether. It was hard at first, like mourning a friend but it's just part of life now and not a big deal. I do a lot of shopping at Trader Joes and our local market has quite a few dietary, specialty foods. Typically, for breakfast I'll have cooked quinoa with blueberries, brown sugar and rice milk. Also, Envirokidz has gf cereals and breakfast bars. For snack, applesauce. For lunch, I usually make sure I have enough leftovers from the night before. That's been the key, being prepared. Otherwise there aren't many options through drive throughs. For dinners, lots of chicken and fish, potatos or rice and cooked veggies. I make turkey meatloaf with gf bread crumbs, etc. Unfortunately, like many others, I don't tolerate salads well. Snack at night a rice krispy treat or hagen daaz has sorbet I do well with. Going out is tricky. I can do mexican. I order entrees with corn tortillas, no cheese. You have to ask if sauces have wheat, most enchilada type sauces do. Ask restraurants if they have gluten free menus, many do now.
Dee has been a huge help with her recipes, take a look at her kitchen.

Thanks for sharing, Becky. You just don't know how many people will read this and maybe just maybe it will help them. I have wondered about you. I hope you have let your doctor know that diet has put you in remission. Your trial with the pizza is proof! Maybe you should post your story where it will be permanent and easily found. Like the "Personal Experiences with Diet" section. I love success stories!

you naughty girl becky lol!!! :lol:

i know what your saying though i did loads of gluten tests just to check if the symptoms were there and yup everytime i ate any gluten i would get that gut ache and gurgling...usually lasts 3 days...and i would feel like crap. Im just really strict with my diet now...and rarely do any testing...guess im used to the gf diet now...

Yep, this is day 3 and I'm starting to feel better. I didn't have to get up last night anyway. Hindsight, I am glad I did it, now, I don't have to be curious ever again. I'm so firm in my convictions, I can't even imagine what it would be like to have a conversation with my GI!

Hi Becky,

So glad to see an update and to know that you are well on the road to recovery. :grin: Can't blame you for your little pizza experiment........when you have made such a major lifestyle change, it's good to remind yourself once in a while why you are doing it. LOL! You must be VERY sensitive to gluten - for some who resume eating gluten, it takes some time to start reacting again (which probably causes more damage to the gut inthe long run). Although maybe your immediate reaction was to the dairy (cheese)?????

I hope you are over the worst and that it's not long before you can again experience "my" definition of happiness. LOL.

BTW, I agree with Tex that most of us here do not seem to be able to reach a full cure for MC (although longterm remission is certainly the experience of most, as long as the meds or diet are continued). This website is the biggest and best collection of MC patients in the world, and I firmly believe that our experience here is the best research study available. I know I would still be sick if I had relied on traditional medicine and not found this place.

Good to hear from you. I've been able to have some dairy without the gurgling and the reaction I got with the pizza. So, I'm a gf fanatic now. My "happiness" is coming back with confidence. Happy spring to you!

Congratulations on what you have achieved and you are so brave to have at least attempted the pizza - not something I think I would ever try. I too have gone the route of no drugs since I handle them poorly and am doing diet alone and have made some good progress in the last 6 months - took me forever. In many respects, your diet and mine sound very similar with the exception of breakfast. I still can't handle salads and have tried repeatedly but can handle just a bit of yogurt in the a.m. for breakfast along with an Envirokids bar or Lara bar.
