Don't Lower Your Guard, Even When Ordering From A G-F Menu

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Apparently, some restaurants haven't done their homework, so you really can't afford to let down your guard, until you've had enough experience with a particular restaurant to be confident that they can be trusted. I found this comment in a GF-oriented newsletter:
Just a caution about gluten free menus. Like others, I was always relieved when handed a GF menu. Recently I ordered from such a menu at Ruby Tuesdays. I had previously told the waiter that I had Celiac Disease and could have no gluten. He handed me the menu and I happily ordered. Wasn't I surprised when my hamburger arrived on a bun (though the menu indicated it would not). The waiter's reply was "but it's not a wheat bun?!". After talking with the manager, it was obvious that even though the restaurant has a GF menu that this doesn't guarantee that the chef and the waiters are aware of what this means! So, I went without lunch (for fear of trying ANYTHING there) and they didn't even apologize!
As always, we have to be constantly vigilant. :sigh:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

So True!!
I had a very good experience at a Cheeseburger in Paradise yesterday for dinner.
I had printed off their GF menu before we went.
The waitress was well aware of what I was expressing when I ordered and said that they have alot of customers that can't have gluten and some other food allergies.
Soooo, I was very happy to get my plain burger with my condiments on the side and fresh cut fries.
I had taken one of my chebe hamburg buns out of my freezer and warmed it in my microwave. Cut it in half, wrapped it in double foil and it was still warm when my meal came.
I rarely eat out and this was a real treat for me..

Love

I had an equally pleasant experience @ Amici's pizza last night!! We have ordered delivery from them once before since they passed out fliers saying they now offer GF crust. We went to dine-in and inquired if they indeed still have the crust. Our waiter quickly brought me an entire *menu* - showing which pizza toppings, salads etc. were GF and how to order them. He was very conscientious about cross-contamination, and brought our pizzas out on separate serving trays. He also made sure we had multiple boxes for the leftovers, acknowledging the pizzas had to be kept separate. It was *awesome* pizza and I was *very* impressed with our waiter's knowledge of safe GF practices. If it wasn't so pricey, we'd eat there weekly to support a great local business!
