Start Looking For More GF Cereals From General Mills

Post by tex »

Hi All,

We will soon have several more Chex cereal offerings available, free of gluten. In fact, some of them are already available in certain areas of the country. Gluten-free Corn Chex has been spotted in various stores, and the target date for all of these is supposedly June 1 of this year. General Mills has decided to reformulate Cinnamon Chex, Corn Chex, Strawberry Chex, Honey Nut Chex, and Chocolate Chex, by replacing the barley malt with brown sugar syrup.

Of course, we will still have to read the labels to make sure that they do not contain something else that we are intolerant of, but the gluten, (technically, malt is actually a derivative of hordein, but most people tend to think of it as gluten), will soon be gone.

I had Rice Chex for breakfast this morning, but I would prefer Corn Chex, so I will definitely be looking for the new version, the next time I go to the store.

 That is good news. I'll keep an eye out......... I hope they can avoid the temptation to put soy lecithin in it too. That stuff seems to be everywhere.

Amen, Shirley!

I think soy was the most difficult of all to tease out and avoid. BTW, how are you doing with your dietary changes?

SLOW!!!! HaHa I have gotten the Spectrum Canola Mayonaise and I like it just as well as Original Helman's (except for the price *ouch* because I ended up ordering off the net and shipping was more than the mayo). Also replaced my Jiff peanut butter with MaraNatha All Natural No Stir. Ingredients in that is dry roasted peanuts, organic palm oil, unrefined cane sugar, sea salt. Unfortunately it is made in a plant that also processes soy and tree nuts so I probably made a mistake there but the peanut butter is very good and I'll watch closer next time. The Jiff was made with soy oil so it's got to be better than that - right.

I ordered some Chebe bread mix online. Made one batch. Didn't care for it too much, although that may be because it's a bit tough to chew with my temporary teeth. Might be fine after I finish with all the dental work. That's going to be a few months yet. I will probably just save the rest of the packages and try again later. I also bought a package of Gluten-Free Pantry Coffee Cake Mix but haven't made it yet. Waiting for when I'm craving something sweet. HaHa I already had several GF Cornbred mixes.

Probably one of the biggest holdups is that I have a lot of things going on right now and it's hard to concentrate of my diet. I have found I don't multitask so well anymore. Never used to be a problem but I get overwhelmed pretty easily now. Perhaps that's because of my intolerances *shrug* or at least partly.

I am working on getting my Mom moved in with me here in Florida, deciding what to keep or get rid of in her place, fretting about selling her place in this economy. We will have to practically give it away but even if we do, we wil get rid of her "rent" for the "lot" so at some point you have to consider the money going out every month and reduce the price of the place accordingly.
At the same time, I've been having a lot of dental work and it's not done yet. I've hurt my knee twice so it's painful and hard to get around a lot. Last time was a week ago. It's been very swollen and is black and blue all the way down to my foot. However I have seen some improvement in the last two days.
At the same time, I've been trying to go through my own place here in Florida and decide what I want to return to Pa. Since I can't load the car like I did when I came down here at first (actually 2-3 times I came with a completely full car load), I will probably end up sending some stuff back by UPS unless I find a way to let go of things that I'd like to keep for one reason or another. At least I have a couple of trips planned this year so that will allow me to take some things. Just not a lot. I give Mom the back seat so she can lie down and try to be comfortable when we are traveling and I try to put as much as possible in the passenger side but that's usually just our suitcases. That only leaves the trunk for "extras".

Anyway, my mind is constantly mulling over all the things I need to get done at her place, my place and in Pa. Wondering how my teeth are going to turn out at the end - if my knee will ever be the same - haha. Diet just seems to be an afterthought. I eat a lot of catch as catch can right now, but I knew it would be slow from the beginning. I have the Asacol to lean on until such time when I can devote more time to taking care of "me". It may be quite a while but I'm changing things a little at a time.

I'm so sorry. I have written a book just to answer a simple question. Must be I needed to "vent" a little myself.

Thank you for asking, Polly.

Shirley,

I think you may be right about the "mixed tocopherols" being a problem. As we all know, vitamin E can be made from a wide variety of items. It was originally made from wheat germ, but these days, of course, most of it is made from soybean oil. I don't see anything else on the label, (other than than the preservative, BHT), that might be causing so many people to react to gluten-free Rice Chex, for example.

Some of the cereals on the soon-to-be gluten-free list already contain soy lecithin, so that ingredient will almost surely remain on the label. The ones that show the most promise, are the Corn Chex, and the Honey Nut Chex. Neither of them contain any soy lecithin, nor any "mixed tocopherols". The Honey Nut Chex does contain both artificial and natural flavors, but I believe that General Mills is upfront with their labeling, and wouldn't attempt to sneak any "known intolerances" past consumers, by hiding them in those vague categories. After all, they state right on the Chocolate Chex label, "CONTAINS SOY, MILK AND PEANUT INGREDIENTS", for example. The Honey Nut ingredient list includes "natural and artificial flavor", and then they specifically list "natural almond flavor", and at the end of the label, they add the statement: "CONTAINS ALMOND INGREDIENTS", for the benefit of those allergic to tree nuts. I really believe that most manufacturers don't realize that the source of vitamin E can be a problem for some individuals, because they are probably going by the best information they have available, from the medical research community.

Anyway, this is why I'm looking forward to trying the new Corn Chex, even though I tested negative to soy intolerance - I still don't trust it. I still get some bloating from the Rice Chex, and if that doesn't happen with the GF Corn Chex, then it will be a pretty good indication that the "mixed tocopherols" might be the source of the problem.

I've been curious about whether you've been seeing any success with diet changes, also, and how everything else has been going, (since I knew that you had a lot going on), but I didn't want to be as nosy as Polly.  (Just kidding, Polly). Thanks for the update, and I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Love,
Tex

Thanks Tex,

And I don't mind people asking me about things. It's perfectly OK. I just feel like I don't have much to say usually but sometimes it all comes pouring out anyway. HaHa

I probably ought to use the "Blog" more often.......... well, actually, I should probably just use the blog since I haven't posted in it but once just to see if it worked. HaHa

We have cinnamon, strawberry, corn, & rice chex in our stores now.
We have a Marc's discount store that sells it for $2.48 a box. Watch out for the dairy....
They are now offering Bob's Red Mill products, too at half the cost of the HFS's.....
Shirley,
Where is your Mother's place located?? Is she in a modular home park??
Curious on the details.
We haven't had alot of time to look while we have been in Florida visiting my sister.
I wouldn't have a clue where to begin on line to check 55 & over places..

Love

Dee, It is a manufactured home, 55+ community. I live just a few doors from her place. We are in the process of moving her in with me. Mine is in better shape than her's. The resale of these things vary greatly. I have seen them at what I thought was rock bottom before (of course, we didn't buy then - haha) and I've seen them at what I consider "through the roof". Right now it is really rock bottom (I think).

We are officially in Fort Pierce, Fl but we are closer to Vero Beach. We just happen to live on the other side of the county line so our mailing address is Fort Pierce. It is a nice quiet, crime free (as far as I know) community. Rules and regs apply according to the owner's whim. HaHa It's actually not a bad place to be (except for the stiffling heat most of the summer) but I just don't want to be here any longer so we will be going back to Pa. for good.... probably after my granddaughter graduates next year. Perhaps prices will pick up a bit before then. :xfingers:

Are you looking for a place in Florida? If so, it's a good time to buy. I wouldn't recommend Mom's place. There are much nicer ones available.

Morning Shirley,

Good luck with the teeth - I know exactly what you are going through having had all of mine replaced with the dentures. Bottoms can be a real pain but you will get used to them.

We also live in a 55+ community here in SE PA and it is manufactured homes but very, very nice ones. Everybody has a porch which is a wonderful feature.

Sorry to hear about the leg and hope it heals real soon.

Had Rice Chex for breakfast on Saturday and loved it.

Love, Maggie

The reformulated Chex have been available for awhile here - I'm loving it!! I've been a "cold cereal breakfast person" my entire life, and it was *killing* me to pay $6-$7 for health food store "micro-boxes" of cereal - many of which are geared for kids. I'm partial to Corn Chex, too Tex! I'm so happy to start my day with a big bowl topped with fresh fruit that I can buy at a decent price/at a regular store/using a coupon!!

I've never seen most of those fancy flavors (cinnamon, strawberry, really?) at our grocery stores - but it only takes one decent product to make a food-intolerant person's day

Stopped at the Marc's Discount Store.
Beware as far as the other Chex cereals.
Dairy, soy, barley malt....
The Rice Chex seems to be the only safe one.

Dee,

Are you sure you aren't looking at the old versions? The new versions aren't scheduled to be on the shelves everywhere until after June 1. The reformulated versions are supposed to have the barley malt replaced with brown sugar syrup. The Corn Chex and Honey Nut Chex should be free of dairy and soy, unless they decide to add them, when they remove the malt.

You don't know how bad I hope what I looked at were the old versions..
The first box that I picked up was the Honey Nut Chex and that was because I use to eat Honey Nut Cheerios before I got hit with the intolerances.
Sorry, if I misunderstood your first post.
Gosh! I've been such an airhead today!!!!

They're usually mixed on the shelves for a while. The first time I bought GF Rice Chex, I carefully read the label, smiled and put it in my basket. Then, as an afterthought, I picked up another, and bought it, too. The next morning, I decided to try it, and the first box that I grabbed, made me think I was losing my mind, because it clearly had gluten in the ingredient list. Well Duh! After that, I carefully read the label on every box.
