Wish Me Luck

Post by Rose »

Well, tomorrow am DH and I are leaving for Florida to pick up the kids from my In-Laws (they have been with them since Sunday). It has been a nice week w/o them since it is the first time we have been apart from both of them since my son was born (12 years). I just hope that the D will hold off. I am trying to stay calm about the whole driving experience, but 8 hours in a car with no bathroom is not my idea of fun. Then we are going to my parents house which is 4 hours from my In-Laws. Monday will be the big 12 hour day in the car with the whole family(oh the joy).

Keep your fingers crossed and I will let you know if we hit the D-Highway or not next week.

Love and Hugs,

Rose

Just settle in and don't be nervous and the ride should be OK. Public restrooms along the way should help you out if the D returns. Would take some Depends just in case. Never travel without them.

Enjoy the family back with you.

Love, Maggie

Thank you all for your support.

Maggie - I already have them packed. I forgot to put them on last night and had a surprise this morning when I got up (I can't believe I forgot to do that).

Anyway, this is my first trip since the cc got really, really bad (over 2 years).

Love,

Rose

Hi Everyone,

I am back. It was a scary trip, but I made it down and back. Going down was tuff, but DH stopped whenever I needed to (or else). I did not take anything either. It all went pretty well except for last night. I went through 2 diapers and got absolutely no sleep. I have been up since 11:00 pm. I thought it was going to be a rough ride home, but we got here about noon (we drove to Georgia yesterday after we left my parents house in Florida). We left the hotel about 5:00 am (the kids woke up at 4:30 b/c of all the toilet flushing).

I am so glad I am home and so thankful for all of your support.

Hi Rose,

It's good to see that you're back home, safe and sound, and the trip was free of any major incidents. Sorry that you had such a bad night. I wonder if that might be somehow related to a release of all the pent-up stress that was building up during the trip, and after you got back home, and breathed a sigh of release, all the chemical changes that had been put on hold, just had to sort of run their course, (or something like that).

Anyway, it's good to see that you're back.

Love,
Tex

Tex,

No it was not that. I know what caused the last night fright and it was my own fault. When we got to the Hilton in GA, we went to the restaurant there and the kids wanted me to eat with them instead of me eating yet another can of tuna in the room. So after looking at the menu, I ordered a veggie platter off of the appetizers and I know that I should have asked them to steam them instead of just serving them raw or I should have had them box them up and I could have micro-waved them back in the room later, but I was hungry and ate them with the family. I know that was a very stupid move, but my kids never get to eat out with me and I though maybe this one time won't hurt. Well, let me tell you, it hurt - BAD. But you live and you learn and my kids were happy that they could do something (anything for that matter) with their mom, so I guess in a weird and totally awful way, it was worth it b/c they were happy.

The things we do for our kids.

Hi Rose,

That was probably what caused it, all right, but as you say, at least it wasn't all for nothing - I'm sure it meant a lot to them. That was a very motherly thing to do. Good for you.

Related to that, the older we get, the more we realize how much our parents sacrificed for us, when we were kids, ourselves.

Rose,

I noticed you mentioned canned tuna. I've noticed that any canned tuna (even the very expensive water(allegedly)-packed tuna that specifically says it is GF, CF, SF and contains only tuna) causes me to have very bad reactions. There's something I'm sensitive to in there, and I think others have mentioned similar experiences. I hate to flag something else in an already limited diet, but there might be something to it.

Courtney,

Thanks, I had a problem with tuna previously b/c I was eating Bumble Bee which had soy in it (not the gold can). Now I only eat the Starkist low sodium albacore tuna, it only contains tuna and water.

I know it was the raw veggies, but my kids were happy and with all they put up with b/c of my illness, being up all night was worth it.

Rose,

For me, any kind of canned tuna keeps me up all night. I wish it didn't because it's a really convenient source of protein.

I know that you're worried about how your illness is affecting your kids, and it was very thoughtful and selfless of you to eat with your children. I've been meaning to mention to you that my mom was very sick for most of my childhood. She was finally diagnosed with hypothyroid when she was about 40, but before that she really went through hell for about ten to fifteen years. To give you an idea, she had debilitating constipation, which was probably the worst symptom, and she slept all the time. It was virtually impossible to rouse her. When we went out anywhere, she had to stop and rest frequently because she just couldn't keep going. One day she completely forgot to pick me up from school due to the brain fog. I know that hypothyroid doesn't seem like that big a deal to those of us who are diagnosed quickly, but it was a terrible ordeal for her.

I wanted to tell you that because I wanted you to know that I know what it's like from a child's perspective. Yeah, we got annoyed with my mom from time to time (which I feel terrible about), and bummed out that she couldn't do a lot of things with us, but both my brother and I turned out fine. In no way did it damage our relationships with her or make us resent her or really have any lasting negative effects. You seem to have a very supportive family, and I think that your experience will be the same.

If eating out with your family is important to you, you might consider talking to the chef at a smaller, local restaurant. I do this occasionally, and many places are able to cook fish for me in a clean pan, broiled or with olive oil. I know that traveling is much harder, though, and many of the restaurants kids want to eat in don't have a lot of great choices.

I do hope you start seeing some results from your diet soon.

Love,

Rose,
I admire what you did for your family, even though you paid a price for it. I'm also relieved that you were able to travel a long distance without any mishaps. I worried about you while you were on your trip.

I know what you mean about wanting to do something with your family. I struggle all the time because my DH loves to go out to eat. This morning he wanted to go out for breakfast. Breakfast in a restaurant is an especially difficult meal for me because I can't eat eggs or gluten, so practically the entire menu is off-limits. I always order fried potatoes with sausage or ham, but I know I'm taking my chances. I go because I hate to deprive him. I feel like he has had to give up so much already because I have this disease. Thankfully, I don't react as severely as you do, but I wonder how many times I've set myself back because I go out to eat.

Courtney,

Thanks so much for the support and the prospective from a childs point of view. I always feel guilty when the kids have functions or field trips at school. Then there are the vacations, which I am unable to take and get togethers with family at the holidays that I can't go to. It is just one big guilt trip. This past weekend was the first time the whole family has been anywhere together in over a year. My DH and I don't go out to dinner b/c we just don't trust anyone with my diet, plus the fact that I can't eat much of anything. It is just as well as we like to grill out and have family time.

BTW, I am still having a hard time with chicken. Have you gotten past your bump in the chicken/turkey road?

Gloria,

Thank you for your thoughts as well. This weekend the hotel we stayed at in Florida (my dad is a smoker, so we don't stay with them) had free breakfast, so I ate mine in the hotel room and then had coffee with DH and the kids down in the dining area. I tell you it was a hard trip, but God really looked out for us.

Love,

Rose
