Nausea and Drug Qs

Post by no-more-muffins »

I have been reading back through several pages of posts and I haven't seen much about nausea. I know that most people with MC have major D but does anyone else have nausea? I am nauseated almost all the time. Can anyone tell me how long it took before their nausea went away? It makes it hard to eat and my appetite suffers. I am sure someone out there has some answers for me....

And is Entocort just for diarrhea or does it actually help the intestines heal? I am going to my internist tomorrow and I wonder if I should ask for entocort. Is it hard to get off of because one can become dependent on it, or is it hard to get off because when you stop the D comes back? I'd like to control things by my diet alone if possible but I am so fatigued and nauseated that I'd take the med if it would help speed things along (I don't have D btw) Is Entocort in generic? Is it expenisve?

Oh, and should I do the pepto thing? Does that help heal the intestines or control the other symptoms or is that also mainly for the diarrhea? I have been taking 4-6 pills a day but I haven't noticed any changes.

P.S. I am kind of havin a bad day. Does anyone have any encouraging words for me (LOL, yes I am begging for encouragement!)

MUFFINS!!!!!!!we are all *rooting* for U---
Sometimes it does feel like *what the heck am I doing right or doing wrong or WHAT!!!!

I know U wont give up---U came this far--another several steps---and U have entered the ball game---
a few strikes--ok---but U will learn from your errors~~~~
and say *now why didnt I think of that*

Nausea was here and there with me--dehydration was a big issues-- but as I posted many times----I had been very fortunate--cus I didnt suffer the way many of our family had--and still are!!!

I will add that entocort did me NO good----plooped me with neuro problems---so that was the end of that--

Like many I cried my eyes out every day---my problem was the first GI--who was an asshole(xcuse me) cus he had no CLUE to anything and I wasnt knowledgeable to QUESTION nor seek further--

Then --to repeat myself---I found another GI and he was furious as to how I was TREATED--or better still *NOT TREATED!!
I did the prednizone---and COLAZAL was my road to wellness!!

And becoming a Tenent here gave me the best courage I needed to know *U will get better*

Hang in---the road may be short and then maybe a few snags might smack U down---but there are other ways to go and U will get there!!

Luve Barbara

PS. Try Pepto----did your GI suggest that??---trial and error is sorta the name of the game!!!
the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control

NMM,

I'm very sorry to "hear" that you're having a bad day, but one of the purposes of this board, is to help us get through bad days, because we have all been there, and we definitely understand how you are feeling.

Nausea was a major problem for me, and it was present most of the time, when I was having bad days. Sometimes I vomited, and sometimes I didn't. Most days, if I were trying to work, when the nausea became bad enough, I would have to lay down, and wait for it to subside a bit, before continuing. When it was bad, I would usually try to eat something like chicken soup, or chicken and rice soup, or nothing at all, (when it was really bad). On more than a few occasions, I spent some time sitting on the toilet, with uncontrollable D, while vomiting at the same time, into a conveniently-located sink. Those days are most definitely not classified as the "good old days" in my memory. The nausea slowly went away, as my other symptoms improved.

Entocort will actually help to suppress the inflammation, but according to Dr. Fine, his research showed that while it will help to control symptoms, it will not completely control the inflammation. Entocort will definitely make your life easier, if you are trying to continue an active life, while dealing with MC.

Good question. Despite all the warnings about this, by the medical authorities, no one among our membership, (to the best of my knowledge), has ever had the slightest problem tapering down the dose, and/or discontinuing the drug, from a true "dependency" viewpoint. I suspect that most doctors, and other medical experts, simply assume that budesonide carries the same dependency risks in the adrenal cortex, as all other corticosteroids, but that simply is not the case, on a practical level, thanks to the enteric encapsulation used with Entocort, that prevents all but about 10 to 15% of it from being absorbed into the bloodstream. As to your question about dependency due to symptom relapse - obviously, that is a strong inducement to resume taking the med. Also, the "security blanket" that it offers, probably tends to makes some people bolder with diet choices, or possibly, less vigilant, when eating out, etc., in some situations.

The patent on budesonide still has another year or two to run, so there is no generic version of the drug. Yes, it is expensive. If I recall correctly, it costs roughly $18 per 9 mg dose, in this country, (though it is no more expensive than the 5-ASA class of drugs) - hard to justify, without good insurance coverage.

Pepto-Bismol actually has some antibiotic properties, so yes, it does help to heal the gut, though not everyone can handle the 8 or 9 tablet per day dose, without neurological effects, or some other reaction. The original treatment, as developed by Dr. Fine, called for 9 tablets per day, for 8 weeks, along with the diet, of course. There wouldn't be any point in taking both Entocort and Pepto-Bismol together, of course, since the Pepto might reduce the absorption of the budesonide in the ilium and the colon, (because it tends to coat the interior walls of the intestines).

It's not easy to feel optimistic on bad days, but you will have fewer and fewer bad days as the healing progresses, and the bad days won't be as bad, as time goes on. I hope you feel better soon. :grouphug:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

No More Muffins,

First Welcome to the board. You have found the right place.

I get nauseated all the time. Not every day, but most days, especially in the am and the pm. I just think of food and sometimes I fell like I want to barf. Now when I was on Entocort I was nauseated 24/7 and due to the s/e I had to get off of it.

Hopefully you will be feeling better soon. I have just learned to live with it d and all since I can not take anything for the mc. The diet helps, but I still live in the bathroom.

Thanks guys. Today has been better. I think I had some virus that was making me even MORE tired and was having some terrible muscle tenderness and achiness. I thought it was just more MC stuff my my dh was actually having the same symptoms and my dd was sick on Tuesday with a cough/sore throat/low fever and muscle aches.

Still nauseated tho. :ill:

I am STILL waiting for my kit to come from enterolab. I ordered it on 6/26 and it still isn't here. I wanted to get it in before the weekend... I have stopped eating all dairy as of a few days ago and now I just really want to get the testing going.

NMM,

I am also fructose intolerant. I do not absorb fructose so it goes right through me with all the water too, hence D. It also makes me nauseous. I never have vomited but even sorbitol in toothpaste makes me nauseated.
