low-dose tricyclic antidepressants

Post by alexandraCA »

Apologies if I missed a thread on the subject but I saw a new GI last week, and though one visit is hardly enough to make an opinion of a doctor, I was very happy to see he was so aware of MC. Also, upon viewing my Entero results (for which a response of good or bad I was prepared for) his reaction was appropriate. He found it interesting but didn't know what to really make of it because of the lack of documentation out there. He did some blood work beyond the celiac test done 5 years ago and (no surprise) results were all negative.

He'd like me to consider a low-dose tricyclic antidepressant. Has anyone used this therapy?

Thanks,
Alex.

PS I have ZERO tolerance for SSRI medications, I have horrible side effects and can't take them but do use meds for anxiety/OCD.

Hi Alex,

I have been on a small dose (10mg) of amytriptaline for almost two years. Mine was prescribed for pain and sleeping problems. It's been very helpful for the sleeping problem and less so for the pain. The only side effect I have noticed is dry mouth at night when I take it. I hear they prescribe doses up to 75mg for IBS. I've been told that one good thing about it is that you can stop anytime with no withdrawal problems.
Good luck .

Love,
Cristi
