The last time that I posted a message was on 5/7/09 (when I joined the Forum). Just to refresh everyone’s memory, I have been battling the “D” for the past 25 years - and was symptom free since1990 without any drugs up until 2007. I won’t bore everyone and reiterate my medical history as was previously posted.
I would like to share with all of you, with the hope that what has recently been working for me, will work for one of you with a regime of Pepto-Bismol (each caplet has 262 mg of Bismuth subsalicylate):
32 days 4 caplets 4 x a day
19 days 4 caplets 3 x a day
25 days 4 caplets 2 x a day
15 days 4 caplets once a day
14 days -0- caplets a day
I was concerned about the high intake of the Pepto-Bismol and have checked it out with my GI, GP, and even my Pharmacist. They have all informed me that this high dosage will not harm me and has the least side effects compared to some of the other drugs that we have all ingested. I realize that everyone is different and this might not work for everyone. But, I am so thrilled to be totally “D” free at present time that I am hoping it will work for one of you as well. I realize that this is not a cure and there is no cure. I have even prepared myself with a prescription of Entocort to be filled, if my problem returns while we go on (hopefully some time in September) vacation.
Since May, 2009, I have also been consuming soy probiotic tablets and soy probiotic yogurt (6 live and active cultures). Who knows - perhaps this, too, has helped me out.
Another thing that I have been doing is drinking “ginger tea”. I have experienced nausea with this particular bout of “D”, and my honey swears his ginger tea has helped me out. It is delicious either hot or cold, and here is his recipe that he swears has even cured my “D” problem, and so in honor of him, I will call it “Honey Tea”
HONEY TEA
2 quarts of water
10 whole cloves
1 stick of cinnamon (broken up)
1/3 cup fresh ginger (smashed with mallet)
2 heaping Tbsp of brown sugar.
1 pkg of artificial sweetener (this is optional)
Boil all of the above ingredients except for sugar and artificial sweetener for approximately 10 minutes. Turn off fire, add sugar and (optional - artificial sweetener). Let steep for 30 minutes - or even up to 4 hours - then strain into container & enjoy!!

Hi Jerri,
I'm so glad the Pepto Bismol treatment worked for you. It did the opposite for me and made my MC much worse. We are all different and what works for one may or may not work for another, but it helps to know what others are doing. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Your Honey Tea looks interesting. It'd be interesting to see your "honey" smashing the ginger with a mallet.
Here's hoping you will have another 17 years of remission.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
I'm going to give the "Honey Tea" a try and have a couple of questions.
1. What is the reason behind adding a packet of artificial sweetener? Does it make the tea taste better? Does too much brown sugar give it an off taste? Have you tried other sweeteners such as regular sugar or honey?
2. How long does it keep in the refrigerator?
3. How much do you drink a day? Are there any issues with drinking more than 2 cups a day?
Thanks,
Rosie

Dear Rosie:
1. I have never added "sugar" - but we use to use "artificial sweetner" when we first drank it. I now like it better without the extra sweetness - try tasting it and see how you like it.
2. Keep forever in fridge - I have kept it as long as a month.
3. How often to I drink it? Well during my bad spells - I usually had 1 cup of it hot in the morning and then drank a glass or more iced in the afternoons.
It really did help me with my nausea, and as you know from my last post - my "honey" swears it is curing my "D".
Let me know how you like it? And if you have any other questions.
Jerri

Jerri,
I think you misread Gloria's post - she did say 17 years. When I first read her post last night, I wondered, "where in the world did she get 17 years?", but then I noticed that you mentioned being in remission from 1990 until 2007.
I hope it lasts at least that long, too.
