I have a couple questions about Lomotil. I recall reading in a post (which I can't find now) that someone said Lomotil contains lactose. Does it really? How disappointing if it does! I rarely use it, but I definitely don't want to give it up. On a different site I also read that it contains gluten. What?! Is it really a double whammy? I can't believe that with so many people on this board having used it, that it would contain both of those allergens, but who knows. The info I get from the pharmacy is no help in answering this question.
I'd also like to know how other people have used lomotil. For example, did you just take it before meals? Did you take it every day? I've read online people using at different times and realized I never was given explicit instructions on when to take it. I just assumed I was supposed to take it before meals to prevent (delay!) problems.
Any wisdom or personal experience anyone has to share would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Shell,
You can check the ingredients in drugs on this site: http://www.rxlist.com/drugs/alpha_a.htm
I've never taken Lomotil, so I can't comment on it, but I'm sure others here have.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Hi Shell,
I never used it, probably because I never had an accident while out and about. When things were at their worst, I was a caregiver at home, so was very close to the bathroom during peak diarrhea times -- still was a big nuisance.
Being at home all the time makes it lots easier than working away from home, and then, I had more control of my diet when I discovered that was what I needed to do, as I could fix all my meals at home, and know what was in them. I realize that most people aren't working at home, and therefore, need a little help to keep from having accidents.
Once I got off gluten, the first of my allergens, the diarrhea slowed way down, but didn't go away til I got off the others.
I believe there's a way to know about which medications contain which allergens. Sorry the pharmacy wasn't much help. Perhaps you could e-mail or call an 800 no. for each product you use, including over the counter meds.
Meantime, there are a whoooole lotta folks on this board who've used the product you mentioned, so perhaps someone who's used it recently will be along before long to tell you exactly which allergens are in those pills.
Wish I could've been of more help. Best wishes to you!
Yours, Luce

hi Shell-----I used Lomotil many times -when I had bad attacks- and it worked *GREAT* for me----
I had no intolerences to the ingrediants---
But of course everyone (at home) always said I was *wrong way Corrigan*----
Also ask your pharmacist about the mixture--
Good luck and lets hear how --if U try it or not--and what the consequences were~~~~

Hi Shell,
This is probably the discussion that you're referring to:

When most people on this board used the product, it did not contain lactose. The manufacturer apparently changed the formulation recently.
As Pat suggested, use Imodium AD, (the original, name-brand product, not a generic) - it's ingredients are all safe, (unless they've been recently changed), and it works the same as lomotil, for most people - plus, you don't have to have a prescription to buy it. (To see the ingredient list, just click on the "INGREDIENTS" link, to the left of the product image.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
