sore rear end!

Post by maddie »

Hi everyone, I won't bore you with the details of my latest flare up but it has been pretty awful these past few days. I have tried almost everything for the sore and raw backside and nothing helps for long. The frequent trips to the bathroom just keep it in this really painful state. Has anyone found something that works? Thanks for any advice. Maddie

Hi Maddie,

Sorry that you're having problems with what Dee refers to as "baboon butt". It's a common problem with MC. Zinc oxide ointment will help, usually, and there are many formulations available, all OTC, I believe.

Calmoseptine ointment, for example, contains 0.44% Menthol, and 20.625% zinc oxide.

Someone suggested another product that they found to be very effective, but at the moment, I can't recall what it's called.

EDIT: After devoting some thought to this, I believe the product was Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, (who could forget a name like that. ):

Note that the active ingredient is 16% zinc oxide.

EDIT #2: Here's another product - Desitin:

http://www.desitin.com/

Apparently Desitin Original contains 40% zinc oxide, plus other "soothing" ingredients, (this is probably one of the most "potent" formulations available):

This isn't the one Tex is thinking of.......... I can't remember that one either...... but you could also try Cortisone 10 (or hydrocortisone plus which is an equate product from walmart).

The Calmoseptine has worked best for me but it is more expensive. If I find the post about the one Tex and I can't remember, I'll edit this post.

Maddie,

I used aleo vera lotion that I get during the summer for sun burn. The downside to using this is you have to reapply everytime you make a run to the bathroom.

Desitin is very good but the Creamy Desitin has an ingredient that is bad for us MCers.

Thanks so much for all of the input! I am on my way to the drugstore to try the desitin, I used it on my kids when they were babies! I have used the cortisone, this time it doesn't seem to be working. I so appreciate all of you and hope all are doing well today.

Desitin should do the trick, but if, for some reason, it doesn't, and you want to try a more potent corticosteroid, you might see if your doc will write a prescription for triamcinolone acetonide. It's a commonly-used product for rashes, but it's about 8 times as effective as prednisone.

I use A&D ointment and it works great for me.
But I also have gotten into the habit of using hygiene pads (Tucks) after my morning potty trip and they help alot, also.
Another option is witch hazel which is alot cheaper than the ointments and pads.

I swear by hydrocortisone! I have tried everything in the drug store and this is the least expensive and works the best for me!

Hope you get some relief soon!

Wow, who would have thought there was help for such "personal" problems. I've tried Preparation H, but it burned so much, it didn't feel like it was helping
So Butt Paste or Desitin, this brings back memories of babies :-)

something that works for me...

I am not sure if this product is available anywhere other than Western Canada but it's called "Bag Balm' and is an ointment originally made for the udders of sheep and cows with mastitis, but it sure is a "Butt Balm" too!. It comes in an approximately two inch square green can and is good for burns as well.

another hint is - if you can handle the extra washing, use moist washers or cotton toilettes, (not sure what you call them there, maybe faceclothes) avoid paper or chemical wipes
I am glad i set up my kit of these (i have about 30 of them) I have used them alot!

i followed the principles of treating nappy rash, also drying your butt via a fan before applying the cream

I remember it was one of hte first questions i asked tex when i joined this site.
I used the zinc ointment cream and a oatmeal based cream that is used for ezchma

i wash the faceclothes with eculptyus wool wash and cleaning vinegar (which is anti bacterial and anti viral)
since childhoood i have been allergic to commercial washing powders and stain soakers

mine was so bad i couldnt sit down for about 2 days, i had to use a inflated cushion

I Feel for you Maddie and suggest you might find Ungvita helpful. It is great on burns which is what I think our rash is like.... a burn. Soothes and places a Coating to protect the skin. Is Helpful for people having Radiation treatment. Soothes and heals the burn area sos the treatment can be repeated sooner. Hope you find relief very soon. Emjayn..

Linda,

You bet, Bag Balm is available all the way down to Texas, at least. Nothing is better for healing those tiny but painful cracks that sometimes develop on our fingers, next to the corners of the nails, during cold, dry winter weather. It apparently has antiseptic properties, because it will heal those splits in only a day or two, usually. I haven't found anything that works better.

But I never thought about using it for "baboon butt".

Thanks for a great suggestion,
Tex
