Do you or anyone in your immediate family, (including your parents), have an official diagnosis of celiac disease

I have it, and other members of my family have also been diagnosed.

relatives with MC or Celiac Sprue

Post by maude »

Hi
I am the oldest of 7 kids and 2 of my siblings have Celiac sprue. I have been checked and don't have it, but was diagnosed with MC. I seem to do better if I eliminate gluten.

Hi Maude,

This is an excellent topic, and it would be interesting to see what the statistics among members might be. Would you mind if I were to convert your post to a poll, and move it to the Main Message Board, so that more people will respond? If you would rather I didn't, no problem - I can start another thread.

Incidentally, for some reason or other, I confused your username with someone else's, and I was in a hurry, and didn't even notice that this was your first post. Please forgive me for not properly welcoming you.

:welcome: to our internet family. Are you newly diagnosed, or have you been dealing with MC for a while? Are you taking any drugs to treat it, or are you trying to control your symptoms by diet alone?

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

Hi Thanks for the welcome!
I have had a diagnosis for about 6 months. I was given an Rx for Lomotil and sent on my way. Since I have 2 siblings with Celiac, and I had had symptoms for 1 1/2 years. I did a trial for a month of gluten-free and had much impovement. Then I was fully tested with a diagnosis of MC.
I'm very encouraged to find this group, as it appears that food sensitivity is a big part of the problem.

Mary Maude,

Wow! Your doc was pretty conservative with his prescription. Many members use Lomotil, for occasional "help", but, of course, it's simply an anti-diarrheal, (it slows down motility) - it does nothing to suppress the inflammation that causes the D. It's a good thing that you had a working knowledge of the effects of gluten sensitivity.

As Joan said, "we're glad you found us."

How do the doctors get better educated about what works beyond the meds?

Unfortunately, that's extremely difficult, because virtually all medical research is financed by the pharmaceutical companies, and they're not going to pay for research that proves that diet changes can control a disease. They're only interested in research that sells more pills. :sigh:

Welcome to our family maude....srry you have had to find us...but now that your here read as much information as you can....Some docs may seem knowledgable about mc but finding a good one is striking a gold mine. sticking with a gf diet certainly was a huge difference for me. I thought I was celiac but the test for cd was negative. I was dx with collagenous colitis .

Many people in my family have GI difficulties and I believe that some of them have MC.
