A step back???
I am not to happy today. I have had three days of progressively worsening D and find it hard to understand what has triggered it. I am GF, DF, SF, LegumeF, fruitF and I do not eat raw vegetables. I am still on 9gm of Entocort a day and the only diet changes I can think of are:
1. Bacon in the morning (not too fatty, 'organic' bacon - when in the UK for the last few weeks before returning to Hong Kong bacon did not seem to bother me)
2. Ginger tea (made with fresh ginger and quite mild)
3. Chestnuts (cooked with chicken), I now note that chestnut is on the Lectin list
4. Perhaps more cooked leak/spring onion/chives/garlic then sensible
5. A new toothpaste that I just noticed has xylitol as a sweetener
6. Some (very little) manuka honey - but I suppose too much?
I am going to cut all these out now to see if this makes a difference.
Sorry to be on a downer. Best ant

Hi Ant,
Don't worry about posting about bad days - we're here for support, and we've all had plenty of bad days, so we can certainly sympathize. The leak/onion/chives/garlic, xylitol, and/or significant amounts of any form of sugar, can certainly cause setbacks. Many of us react to the sugar alcohols, including xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, etc. I even get D from then now, after being in remission for years. Hopefully, cutting all that stuff out, will bring a prompt recovery.
You're up pretty late, (or early, as the case may be) - I hope it's not due to an emergency run to the loo.
Good luck,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I'm sorry ant. It can be so frustrating when things start to look better and then take a turn for the worse. I am kind of in the same boat lately so I can empathize. I don't know what could be causing your setback, but I wanted to say that I'm sorry. It's hard to be feeling even a bit better and then go back to the beginning again.
Are you intolerant to all lectins? I am asking because I am beginning to think I may have a problem with peanuts and legumes. How did you discover some of your intolerances that enterolab doesn't test for?
I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

Hi Ant,
Well, darn. It's so frustrating to not know what you are reacting to. Are you more stressed than usual? I have started to notice on days when I don't get enough rest I am more symptomatic. Just a thought. Also, it could just be a GI bug - there's plenty of that going around now.
Sure hope you feel better soon.

Sorry to hear you're having a setback. It's very frustrating to eliminate so much and still have problems.
I'd vote for the chestnut and leeks/onion combo as the culprit. Hopefully you'll feel better once you've eliminated the foods you are suspecting.
We all have bad days - don't worry about sharing your concerns. That's why we're all on this board.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Dear Friends, thanks so much for your support - it really helps!
Tex, yes it was late - I could not go to sleep thinking that about the setback, so I thought if I post on the board I will feel better. It worked as I got to sleep soon after. Thankfully I did not have to rush to the loo again in the night, but this morning it was D again (day 4). But today I am not depressed because I have all you guys to pep me up.
NMM, sorry to hear you are in a similar place to me. I hope you solve the problem and start getting better soon. My Enterolab intolerances were Gluten, Diary [Anti-gliaden IgA (92), Anti-transglutaminase IgA (70) and Anti-casein IgA (15)] and probably Soy and Egg [Anti-ovalbumin IgA (8) and Anti-soy IgA (9) - high end of just below norm]. Dietary yeast was not looking too bad [Anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae (6)]. Apart from these tests, the only way I discover any intolerance is by having a reaction like I am having now and as you know it is difficult to work out what is what. Other foods like legumes and fruit I suspect from my reactions (but nothing clear cut) and what I have read here and in other places. Having knocked out Gluten, Diary and Soy I am now paying more attention to FODMAP. My more ruthless reduction of Lectins, fiber and sugars should hopefully tell me something....if I get better in the next couple of days
Mary Beth,
It could be a bug or stress...I have felt a bit more tired and yesterday had slight puffiness under the eyes, but no temperature. On the stress side, until the D set in I was feeling pretty OK with life....now "D".... that causes stress and worry for sure!! As they say "which comes first the chicken or the egg"? Although in my case, of course, "egg" is off ...... Along with the D I have had quite a bit of rumbling in my tummy - I do not know if stress, tiredness and/or a bug would cause that? As I write this there is still some rumbling going on down there (I hope it is signaling the end of the thunderstorm not half way through it)
Barbara, I always love reading your posts - all of life is in them....the good and the great; the sad and the brave; thoughtfulness, just indignation and a great sense of fun. Thanks so much.
Deb, I think you are right about going for a "blah" menu (but I will also keep off the bananas). My menu for today is really yummy..... breakfast = rice cake and water; lunch = brown rice cream (i.e. rice and hot water) and green tea; dinner will be steamed sweet potato and grilled chicken (olive oil and a little salt), washed down with some Evian water lovingly served at a perfect room temperature....If I do not excite my taste buds, maybe I will not excite my bu*t!
Gloria, thanks for your thoughts - I also suspects the chestnuts and onions most. In fact, I just started the chestnuts 4 days ago because a Chinese doctor suggested they might help with "hardening stools". Hmmmm we shall see. The good news is that if I now get better I should get some more learning on my food intolerances/sensitivities.
All the best, from a happier (if not yet better) ant

Ant,
The loud rumbling is just a sign that you are having an all-out MC reaction. It's a characteristic marker of all of the IBDs, (and possibly celiac disease, but I'm not sure about that one). Sometimes, it's a sign that the reaction is winding down, and it often was, in my case.
Be aware that some members have problems with sweet potatoes, because of the fiber content. Their fiber content is not extremely high, but it's significantly higher than regular Iris potatoes, for example.
Good luck - hope you see some significant improvement today,
Tex

Ant, sorry to hear about your setback. For the most part I have been doing pretty good, but every once in a while something sets me off, and it's so hard to figure out what it was. A few weeks ago I had some problems. I had 2 eggs and some bacon for lunch. I don't have eggs very often, but have been tested and aren't sensitive. But about 2 hours after eating I got a terrific headache, very unusual, and then had some d that evening. I was bummed thinking that I might be developing problems with eggs, and after already eliminating gluten, dairy, soy and yeast, it was depressing. Since then, I've had smaller amounts of eggs and bacon with no problem, so I don't think it was that. I had been adding flax seed oil back into my supplements for several weeks, so I stopped taking that. But who knows..... that's what's so frustrating about this. It's like there are all sorts of hidden bombs and who knows when we'll set one off.
On the brigher side, I was on a trip for 4 days, and didn't have any problems. The restaurants in Seattle all seem to be aware of food sensitivities. I had a wonderful meal at a famous Seattle Restaurant, Ray's Boathouse. When I told the waitress about my sensitivities, she didn't bat an eyelash. She pointed out the 2 items on the menu that the chef couldn't do, but said that all the others could be made without those items. They use canola oil in all their sauteing and make their dinners from scratch, so can easily substitute.
I hope you get a handle on the dietary devil soon.

Gourmet five star menu for today::chef:
breakfast = 6gm Entocort, hot rice cream and green tea
Lunch = rice cake and green tea
Dinner = 3gm Entocort, grilled chicken and boiled potatoes (not sweet potatoes this time) seasoned with salt, a generous squeeze of fresh lemon and drizzled with olive oil. Washed down with.... (you've guest it!)... green tea
BM this morning = soft (not D)
Rest of the day = no BMs, no urgency, almost no rumblings in the tummy.
So, so far so good
I am going to stick with this for a few more days and then (assuming the BMs firm up) individually introduce other foods and see if I spot anything.
Best, ant
