SIBO - Another Risk Associated With Taking A PPI

Hi All,

The evidence seems to be accumulating, that the group of stomach acid production suppressants known as Proton Pump Inhibitors, (PPIs), may cause several types of unanticipated problems, for patients who take them regularly. The latest discovery to be added to the collection, is the tendency for PPIs to cause Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, (SIBO), in some patients.

In retrospect, it seems pretty obvious, since one of the primary functions of stomach acid is to kill many types of pathogens, before they can become established in the intestines. When you dilute the acid, it allows certain pathogens to survive the trip through the stomach. It's been known for several years that PPIs can sometimes cause MC. Perhaps this is the mechanism by which that occurs.
