this has never happened before...

Post by Rach »

I've been doing a gluten-free diet for some time now with pretty good results. Still having D but overall feeling much better. Then tonight, I was really straining while going to the bathroom. Nothing much would come out, there was bright red blood on the toilet paper. I've never had anything like this happen before, and I'm pretty freaked out by it. I know this isn't *normal* and I"m definitely going to need to see my doctor about it, but has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? I have some cousins with Crohns and all I can think is that maybe this is a symptom of that...Ugh. I thought things were getting better.

Dear Rach

The only time this has happened to me is occasionally with hemorrhoids. (Possibly that is the case with you??). I am sure you will get some more responses from others here. All best wishes and good luck with your doctors visit., Ant

Not to worry, Rach.

Usually one-time bright red blood (especially after straining) is due either to a small anal tear or hemorrhoids. It would be unlikely to be Crohn's, IMHO.

Happy New Year!

Hi Rachael,

Sorry to hear that this is worrying you, but I have to agree that the odds are very high that Polly and Ant are right on target with their assessment of the situation. hemorrhoids are very common with MC, (the blood vessels become inflamed and weakened, along with the rest of the tissue in the lower GI tract. Many of us have had that problem during flares.

Obviously, the straining exacerbates the problem, by putting additional pressure on the blood vessels. Are you eliminating all dairy products as part of your diet? Dairy tends to cause me to have C, (sometimes mixed with D), and at times it caused me to strain unnecessarily, during BMs.

Also, certain food additives tend to "tenderize" and inflame 'roids, making them much more likely to engorge and bleed. I know that for a fact, because I had it happen to me, long before my MC symptoms ever showed up. After this went on for a couple of weeks, I was about to break down and see a doctor, when it dawned on me what was happening. I stopped eating the suspect food item, and that totally eliminated the problem.

Enjoy your Sunday - you've just experienced another of the myriad side effects of MC. :sigh:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Rach,

This time of year, there's a lot of peppermint around. If you're passing blood, avoid the peppermint for a while - until you're back to your usual. One of the side effects of a lot of peppermint oil is that it can make people with sensitive digestive tracts more susceptible to bleeding. My GI asked me to try enteric coated peppermint oil (which is really concentrated) because helps some people with intestinal spasms. With my multiple digestive issues, the first dozen capsules passed intact, but then one decided to break open in my stomach and I was throwing up blood and passing bloody D for a couple of days.
