Tornado hit
Hi all,
I've been on line since this happened, but about 11 PM Central (Daylight Savings time), almost two hours ago, some really QUICK, whirling winds went over the house, lights went out a while, and then again briefly.
We'd been experiencing electrical conditions and under a tornado watch that was supposed to last until about 11 PM, and flood watch, and had been having quite a bit of lightning, so I thought we'd about seen the last of it when this happened. I was in the den, but immediately went to check on Mom who was in bed, and a bit frightened because her hearing aid had blepped when the power went off in the house, and that woke her up -- then she was aware of the total darkness.
After things calmed down, I decided to just have a look outside to see how much of a clean-up there would be from the winds as with big trees, there's usually quite a few of the smaller limbs and twigs that are scattered about.
Welp, I GASPED when I looked out the back window and saw that a huge portion of at least one of the big pines in the back yard had fallen on the roof.
When I opened the back door, the smell of fresh pine was everywhere!
Fortunately, the part of the roof it fell on (unless there's more on the garage) is only the part that covers the walkway between the house and the garage.
Of all the places it could've landed, this was a perfect landing as it's really not all that long a walkway.
Matter-of-fact, the opening between the side of that part of the roof and the fence where I would normally be looking from the walkway into the back yard is completely blocked with pine tree, so I really couldn't see through there to see how much of the tree this really is. Did see the tree to the side of it through another window -- just the trunk as there's no light out there.
Wow, sure am glad I put the car in the garage, at least I THINK I'm glad as I haven't been out to check the garage -- that'll come tomorrow.
Welp, I was now expecting the big oaks out front to be damaged, and sure enough, somebody's BIG limb is down blocking our driveway, so tomorrow, it'll take some work to be able to get the car out. Lots of debre all over the place, and saw another massive limb on the curb of a neighbor's front yard.
Bet there'll be LOTS of insurance claims from this one, particularly from the cars that were hit by tree limbs or whole trees. May have been some hail, but couldn't tell for sure. usually there is with tornados, as well as that awful GREEN lightning, but I stay away from doors and windows during the electrical parts.
Actually, this pine leans right toward the middle of the roof in back of the house, and if it had been a straight wind from due south, it could've fallen through the roof on top of where I was sitting, or a piece of it big enough to kill me could've come straight through the big window between here and that tree.
Whew!! THAT was a close one!
Wow, just heard on radio that winds were so strong they caused a two story apartment building to collapse. Not sure how close that was though. Maybe will see it on the news tomorrow.
Thought that since it was a holiday tomorrow, I'd call my sis and bil to see how they did in the storm, and tell them what happened here. Bil answered and said that they were still up as the electricity was out so it was HOT over there and they couldn't sleep.
Maybe the city will send some big trucks out to help with big limbs. Need to get some pictures before anything's done about the back yard tree as there MAY be damage that can't be seen through the darkness.
Hmm, makes me wonder if perhaps that tree didn't protect the house from getting a direct hit. Actually, think the tornado went a little above the roof, so just hit the taller trees. Could be some power lines down, but ours wasn't out long at all -- funny how that happens.
OK, got THAT off my chest. Now, wonder if I'll be able to sleep tonight! Yours, Luce

Oh, WOW, luce!!! How frightning!! It's good though, that you didn't realize the tree had hit the house until you looked outside bacause it would have been even more scary if you had heard it and didn't know what it was. I'm so glad it landed where it did. I do hope the garage and car are OK. Let us know when you get a chance to evaluate the damage.

Oh MY GOSH Luce! So glad you and mom are ok!
Do you have someone to help you clean up the mess?
Take care of yourself (and mom too). We will be thinking of you!
Is the weather behaving today?

Luce,
I'm very thankfull you and your Mom are okay. Close call, for sure. Give us an update if you can- I'm guessing there has been other damage around you. In times of crisis, communities come together so I'm certain you will get help with cleaning up and stuff like that. Take care and keep us posted.
Love,
Joanna
