Is this normal?

Post by AnnieW »

Hello Everyone,

I just started to eliminate gluten and dairy from my diet- I am only 5 days into this but I am experiencing some symtoms I would like to run by you guys. I seem to be getting slight headaches every day, some slight nausea, and heartburn. Is this normal and how long does it seem to last? Does it also suggest that I am indeed intorlerant to gluten and or dairy?

I am cutting out as much gluten as I know about but I am sure I am not 100% gluten free as I don't know all the hidden verbage to look for yet but I'm working on it.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Annie,

When I went through the early days of my diet, I was so sick that I couldn't tell what was causing what, but I often had bad migraine headaches, aches and pains all over my body, stiff, sore joints, bloating and severe abdominal pain, and occasional nausea. Sometimes I would vomit, but that didn't happen very often. My symptoms lasted pretty much until I finally was able to reach remission. Did these symptoms begin after you started the diet, or did you have them before?

If you are sensitive to gluten and/or diary, then eating them can certainly cause those symptoms, but if you did not have the symptoms before you started the diet, then cutting out gluten and dairy should not cause any new symptoms. Are you taking any medications? Some of the drugs prescribed to treat MC can cause those symptoms, and more.

As you become more familiar with food ingredients that contain gluten or dairy, you will become better at reading labels, and you'll be able to do a better job of avoiding them.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Annie

my dear friend who is a naturopath says symptoms like that is your body (digestion, liver, kidneys everything) adjusting. The headaches are a natural 'withdrawal' side effect,
if you used to eat gluten every meal and have now minimised it, your digestion has to reprogram itself (does that make sense)

depending on what gluten type foods/ingredients you have eliminated you may have reduced your intake of things like yeast and preservatives.

Thanks so much for the replies. I am starting to feel better and noticing some encouraging differences so I will keep moving forward.
I am very interested in the Naturpathic view and what things he or she thinks might help so if there is any info to pass along I would be most grateful.

Please take care!

Hi Annie,

You might want to check you are drinking enough water. It is very easy to get slightly dehydrated, especially when you change your diet and aren't eating and drinking like your old habits. Dehydration will definitely cause headaches.

You could also be adding in something new that isn't sitting well with you. Are you mostly sticking to basic foods, or adding in GF processed stuff? The GF foods you buy will tend to contain different grains and gums that you may not be used to. Maybe keep an eye on whether the heartburn symptoms are linked to eating something in particular will help you identify a cause.

I know if you have gone from a diet high high in processed food to one with mostly natural foods, my naturopath would consider the sort of symptoms you mention to be signs of the body cleansing itself - and would recommend keeping well hydrated and looking after yourself to ease the change. Time for a spa bath
