Paging Mary Beth
Hiya Mary Beth,
You know, I had forgotten about your flu shot reaction. It reminded me that I also had a reaction to a vaccine shortly before I developed MC. I had gone to a new PCP who gave me a Td (tetanus/diphtheria) booster. I devolped miserable hives and itching for several days afterward and felt lousy. When I checked my records, I found that it had only been 7 years since my last booster (they are recommended every 10 years). Since then I have refused all vaccines, including flu shots. I don't know if this was related to the food intolerances, but in view of your experience, it could be possible, I suppose. Maybe I'm a "leaker".
That's great that you will be working on a cookbook! Your sample meals sound yummy - very simple and wholesome.
Love,
Polly

i was about to ask a question about this. media reports in Australia are saying that with winter approaching we could be in for flu epidemic which would include swine flu flare up.
I was pondering the viability of having the vaccine (i have been a bit anti vaccines in the past) mindful that i have a lower immunity and the possible impact the flu virus could have on the MC
are there any articles about the vaccines and MC people?

Hi Gabes,
I'm not aware of any articles on MC and vaccines, but maybe others are.
Here is my reasoning: Since I have a hyperreactive immune system that reacts to "normal" proteins like those in certain foods and/or to the "good" bacteria in my GI tract, I worry that it will definitely overreact to non-normal proteins/bacteria/viruses that may be in a vaccine. Also, I am a great believer that adequate vitamin D levels are protective against colds and flu. So, I did not get the flu vaccines this year but am taking 6000 IUs of vitamin D every day.
This is just my thinking - I would not recommend this approach for anyone else. Obviously, if you are older, have underlying chronic diseases, etc. you should seriously consider getting vaccines.

Polly

Polly,
Certainly sounds like you had a mast cell response with hives etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there were alot of leakers out there. Do you have a problem with flushing, getting very red in a hot shower or dermatographism? I don't have those symtoms (prostaglandin problem) but many with mast cell issues do.
Gabes,
I am anti-vaccine for many reasons. One thing I learned from my experience is that the vaccine injury reporting program in the US is woefully deficient, so I don't think anyone has a clue as to true side effects of vaccines. Get your vitamin D level over 50 and it should help as much as any vaccine.

Mary Beth,
I couldn't agree with you more about aiming for vitamin D levels over 50. (I am assuming you mean the 25(OH)D blood test).
Here is a link to a VERY interesting review article abstract by the Harvard School of Public Health that shows that levels approaching 100 may be even better...........at least for the conditions they looked at - bone mineral density, lower extremity function, dental health, risk of falls and fractures, and colorectal cancer:
www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/84/1/18
I am a believer!!!! And of course, these optimal levels could never be achieved with the current recommendations for vitamin D supplementation.

Polly
P.S. Nope, no problem with flushing.

I agree as far as NOT getting the vaccine!
The effectiveness of vitamin D against swine flu has been observed by two physicians, one in Wisconsin and the other in Georgia who found that people using high doses of vitamin D rarely got infected with swine flu or other flu compared to those who did not take vitamin D supplements.
The health observer said even those who have gotten the swine flu vaccine would be better off taking vitamin C and D supplements, as the h1n1 vaccine is not effective in 100 percent of recipients and these two vitamins are safe to use even at high doses, a few grams a day for vitamin C and 4000 to 6000 IUs a day for vitamin D.
