Hi All,
Apparently, Massachusetts will become the first state to require special training for restaurant workers, on how to properly serve people with food allergies. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

it will be interesting.....
was about to right a post about my experience on the weekend.
We (TK and I) headed up town 2 hours away to met up with some old work mates of his for lunch. I was a bit unsettled as friday night the venue got changed (i had discussed my eating options with the first venue and had everything organised)
saturday morning before we left home i phoned the new venue, do you have gluten free options, Yes, he read out parts of the menu that are gluten free. All good
we drive up there, meet up with the people at the cafe. Mindful it was the first time i had meet these people and the reason that i did the venue pre-checks is that i didnt want to appear like i was a pain in ass type that has to have special meals.
the girl is taking my order and i said can i have the grilled fish with NOTHING, no butter, no spice just a small amount of oil in the pain she writes down the order and there is no notation
then there was a debarkle about table numbers, payments and some other girl grabs the order to take it to the chef, and i said 'please tell the chef that i dont want anything on it' it has to be gluten and dairy free. she barely acknowledged what I said.
time passes, the other people at the table got their meals..... 10 minutes later ours are not there which makes me suspect that something has gone wrong.
the meals came out - and i suspect that they cooked the fish wrong and then cooked another, but it came out cooked in butter, and lemon pepper seasoning. Mindful that the other people were over halfway through their meals.
Sure enough - 30 mins later the cramping started so i took the tablets etc
the lesson learnt is that i will ask to speak to the owner or the chef to place the order and not trust the 16 year old on the counter.

Gabes,
What a bummer. Sorry to hear how that turned out. I think you're right, though, about who to talk with. The owner and the chef, care about the future of the business, so they care about customers. Most waiters and waitresses usually don't care about anything but tips and quitting time, unfortunately.
I hope you feel better soon.

Cie la vie.... it is all part of the adjustment. Lesson learnt.
I had my easy to digest foods with me (gooey rice and Jelly and i dont eat them together) so having jelly for afternoon tea, and gooey rice for dinner assisted the body to cope with the situation.... without too much bad stuff happening. and it will take me a couple of days to get the body back to normal after having to take the tablets.

Gabes,
Your story rings so many bells with me. I have got a big "business launch" coming up on Wednesday. The menu is "set" and I have emailed ahead and been assured of my special menu. We'll see how it goes.
Hope you recover quickly.

P.S. What jelly do you use? If am trying to keep off fructose/sugar, but would love to get a pudding dish on my repertoire.
