Is this normal?
Hi all, I seem to have fallen into a pattern finally, after taking Asacol for several days and seemingly getting over the daily really bad D with watery explosions. Seems like I can be free of BMs for a day and a half, and everything is quiet in the gut, then finally I get the signal, head for the bathroom and have formed soft BM followed by mushy stuff. Maybe 10 minutes later I head back for a continuation of mush into watery, etc until cleaned out. Have some crampy feelings after and kind of ache all over, then it disipates and I feel pretty good. Repeat a couple days later, etc. Seems the bowel goes from quiet to active and once active, insists on "everything goes". Is this how it works? I think without the Asacol there would be no peace in between time. It definitely has a calming effect which I noticed right away. I have tried to take less of it than prescribed, four tablets instead of six a day, and maybe that is the problem. I also expanded my diet to include a piece of cheese and a tablespoon of ice cream. I am going to eliminate them. Hard to believe they could cause trouble.?? Not to gross anybody out, but just comparing notes, and thanks Sylvia
Do good or do not
Sylvia,
I suspect that we all have our own "customized" patterns, but the one you described is certainly not unrealistic. Some of us "cycle", and some don't. In my case, for example, I would go all the way to C, at one extreme, with no BMs for several days, and then after a few days or so of somewhat normal BMs, I would be back in the nausea, cramps, watery D phase for a while. For me, this cycle repeated over and over, seemingly ad infinitum.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

If you are dairy intolerant, then yes, that amount of dairy would certainly do me in! Best to avoid dairy for right now, and not try any testing until you get stabilized.

Dear Sylvia
"Soft, to mushy, to watery". That is a familiar pattern to me. You can't gross anyone out here.

(P.S. "soft to mushy to watery" is much better than "watery, to watery, to watery" and offers a chance of graduating to "firm, to soft, to mushy" which is where I seem to be most of the time this week)

I am catching up on posts - I don't check in very often! But I saw your comment about dairy in Asacol and thought I'd let you know that I could not take it (I'm assuming because of the diary). It actually GAVE me "D"! But I can take Entocort, and it helps for flares. Oddly, it does not help me for extended periods - it makes me feel ill. But for 3-7 days it can be really helpful, and cut the length of a flair down to just days, instead of weeks.

Thanks!
I just discovered/joined this web site today, and want to thank you for
your candor re: How It Is. While I knew others had micro colitis, I didn't
have any direct contact with a fellow sufferer.
Just going to the bathroom is such a part of it. I'm feeling better about
my experience as a result of hearing what you are willing to share about yours.
In time I will respond in more detail.
Best,
Joan

Welcome!!
Yes, we don't hesitate to talk about things that most people would think too gross. It's all just a part of our lives and it helps to know we are not alone.
Happy you felt comfortable enough to post right away.
