Dear Wayne,
To answer your question : Generic Effexor is sold under the name Venlafaxine tablets and is manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals. Among the strengths available are 25 mg, 37.5 mg, and 100 mg. I take 75mgs a day.
I truly understand when you talk about the gray areas, but we can help you become your own health advocate. Alot of us have had to do that to the extent of espressing to our doctors what we would like to try as far as meds pertaining to not only MC, but other health issues.
You have alot of people supporting you here, so don't be shy as far as asking for help or where to start, to get you on the road to recovery.
Love
Dee

Wayne-----I do believe that many of us have been in the *cluthches*of many of the issues that U have posted--
I know that depression has over taken me many times---meds. that didnt work---doctors that were of no help---but knowing that U just have to !get up and keep searching! is your first step-----and U can get there!!!!!
It is like a little baby learning how to take its first step towards *crawling*--but keeps falling --yet tries again and does it!!!! and then the same when learning how to WALK---first step and goes down but the *inside* is saying I am going to do this and up again and standing --now one step and than the other and here it is---WALKING!!!
U can do it-----U already have decided on the first step---calling your doctor~~~~
Sometimes the answer is right in *front of our face* but being we get to be so damned frustrated we dont see it~~~~U will balance the see/saw--

i hear you and empathise with the 'having to have things defined'
prior to MC i was a superorganised perfectionist type. (most people would say 'anal')
i would plan work outfits based on meetings etc 2 weeks ahead, i would plan meals and lunches etc 2 weeks ahead
post MC - that isnt working. I have to embrace each day for what it is, and not how i planned it to be.
no matter what the diagnosis, any change especially major life change is shi**y.....
good luck with the doctor, i hope there are some postives for the step forwards you are taking

Wayne,
We are all different in what helps us and what our intolerances are. I am like Jan, I need gluten. I cannot eat fructose. Just to be sure I would suggest that to get things under control immediately that you fix some boiled chicken or maybe a turkey burger ( just the meat) and then cook some Cream of buckwheat ( I use Pocono brand. ) It is gluten free. Easy to fix and it is filling. Don't eat any vegetables or fruit at first. See if this gets the D under control. Then you can start adding back in other things one at a time. Eating junk won't get things under control and for me anyway eating lots of vegetables and fruit is not good either. This is a very frustrating disease but you can get this under control. Ok, maybe you won't be completely normal but you can work toward that once you get things somewhat under control. Meds didn't do it for me either. I would have taken them if they had worked but they didn't. Diet seems to be the best for me. This all is just a suggestion and I know you'll do what you want to do and that's ok too. Just know we care and have been there too!

Wayne,
I just read your post and all the replies. All the kind replies shows just what a great group of people belong to this site. When I was diagnosed with LC back in 07 I was sure that I would somehow outgrow this horrible condition. Well that hasn't been the case. I will go through periods whereby I am free of "D" for weeks on end. Then suddenly I will have a terrible attack and I can usually trace the cause to eating something fibrous. Last night for dinner I decided to eat a small serving of peas....which I have not eaten in probably more than a year. About an hour later I was having so much abdominal pain I could barely move. Fortunately I have an anti-spasmodic medication that I took and the pain went away fairly quickly. But the point I am making is that I slipped up with my diet and had to pay the price. I think you are going to have to accept the fact that diet is a very important part of living with MC. There may not be a cure for it, but by being very careful of what you eat can greatly help reduce the severity of the illness. And whenever you feel bad and not in control of your life....you will naturally become depressed. When I say .....you......I am speaking universally. But if you just keep in your mind that you will get better....then I think that will help you with your feelings of depression. And as the others have suggested you need to find a doctor who will listen to you.
One last bit of advice......as some have already mentioned.....Vit D is very important......and one of the best ways of getting it is simply to go out in the sun everyday and let it shine on your face .....without any sunscreen for about 15 to 20 minutes....each day. If you are able try to just go outside and enjoy a nice brisk walk.....the exercise will help tremendously. You have a lot of friends on here who are truly concerned about your welfare.....so keep us posted. And one last bit of advice.....remember things always seem worst at night.....so if you get the blues at night.....watch something funny or read something uplifting.....before retiring.

Wayne,
i know how you feel. i feel that way too. I'm a 21 yr old Marine stuck around people who don't understand. it took me 6 months to see a GI doc. I doo take antidepressants. My name is Olivia and i have PTSD and LC. I've been dealing with my PTSD since i got back from afghan in 09. i've tried so many different pills. Prozac, Cymbalta-with strettera, Celexa, Lexapro, and now paroxetine(paxil). i'm always in the ER i can't take care of my jumior marines. i can't work out, i can't deploy...i feel like i'm less of a Marine, makes me feel like i'm not worthy of it. Its been really hard i've tried keeping my LC a secrete. Thanks to my husband i talked to my FRO (family readiness officer) who introduced me to my sonsor Kelley. She is there for me when ever i need her. I've never been the type of person to open up about my hurt (thats my ptsd kicking in) and i do have to go to therapy because i don't talk about my feelings. i bottle everything up. Its so embarassing when i'm at work in the bathroom and the junior marines come in making fun of the girl in the stall making fart noises. i'm in so much pain sometimes i'm crying in the bathroom praying to God that he lets it be over. I'm currently in my constipation phase and it hurts soooo bad. i have to go and my intestines are gurgling. but nothing but gas comes. its sad because one moment i'm begging the Lord to let me stop having D and the next i'm begging him to let me go. even with all the pills for my depression, there is no miricle cure. good friends, healthy food, doing things you love, the little things get me thru the day. I pray for you. It'll get better, do you know why? Because you have people like us who feel you and know how you feel we are a special family the few and the proud Potty People.

Wayne, PLEASE do the Enterolab test(s). I am pleading with you because you will then know your intolerances or at least some of them.
My father was a doctor but I still raise the PP to most of them regarding MC.
I trust Tex, Dr. Polly and the PP more than the GIs and other doctors. I hated my GI at first (and I hadn't even met her) because she wouldn't write a prescription for the EnteroLab tests even though I told her I was going to do them anyhow. Things changed and she actually listened to me. I even hugged her at one appointment because I felt so fortunate that she listened instead of rolling her eyes like the other docs when gluten free was mentioned. I armed myself with posts from the PP. Camryn's Mommy had some great posts about how gluten affected Camryn.
You may need a doctor to prescribe some meds to help you but armed with info from EnteroLab, you don't need a d*** doctor to help you with diet. You don't need his/her permission either.
The computer is really hard on my eyes so I need to get off of it. Sorry I didn't reply sooner but we were out of town.

Wayne!!!
Wow!
Sounds like you are really PO'd!!! IMO, GOOD!!!
Maybe now you'll take your health into your own hands.
Most of us have had no luck with alot of docs because they have NO CLUE as to what to do for us as far as the MC...
Take it in your own hands and call the UVa Center & tell them you want to be seen by the IBD doctor's and that you don't have a clue as to why they scheduled an appt. for you in the hepatology dept..
If the Celexa is still making you loopy, then slowly, wean yourself off of it.
Have you asked friends or family what PCP that they go to??? Sometimes word of mouth is a good thing!
Love
Dee~~~

I think my quote was cute and it is so true. There was only of few of us out there and we are willing to stand up and communicate, to teach, to accept, and even to joke. That makes us proud. We're Potty People and I'm proud to be in this special family with all of you
