New Procedure For Treating Acid Reflux, GERD, Etc.

Post by tex »

Hi All,

It's called Esophyx. This is a brand new procedure, but those who have had it done, claim it is great, and effectively resolves their issues with indigestion and acid reflux.

Unfortunately, it is apparently only available in Dallas, TX, for the moment.

Tex,

You really are amazing! I don't know how you manage to find the most recent medical information so quickly.

As you know from my previous posts (since the beginning of the year) I've had a terrible time with acid reflux .....and in sharing this with some of my friends.....I've found out that several of them do as well.

We all seem to do best with either a PPI or a very strong anti-acid (or combination of both) even though we don't like the idea of taking these medications on a long term basis.

In my own case, I have noticed a huge improvement since I went off of Sanctura. I still have GERD on occassion......but the terrible upper abdominal spasms I was experiencing......I now think may have been caused by Sanctura.

In any event, I am going to investigate this new procedure and pass it on to others that have GERD.

Thanks for posting this information......from the bottom of my burning heart!

for the past 2 weeks i have had GERD for the first time in my life.

we are still trying to figure out why the unsettlement in the digestion is having big impact on spleen...

Issy,

I cheat. I subscribe to several newsletters that cater to various industries, and whenever I see something that might be of interest to members of the board, I post the information.

Incidentally, have you ever seen this article? After you wade through the medical treatments, there's a discussion on using apple cider vinegar as a treatment, that is much more detailed than simply swallowing a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar each day. They do a great job of explaining how and why this works, and you might find this variation of the treatment to be much more effective. The testimonials are certainly impressive, anyway.

You're most welcome.

Gabes, sorry to hear you are dealing with GERD. Is the acupuncture helping? For what it's worth....I would not hesitate to take a PPI if you are not getting relief with the acupuncture. The reason I say this is because if you allow the acid to eat away at your esophagus too long you run the risk of developing cancer.

I knew someone who developed esophageal cancer and passed away from it. I do not know that it was caused by GERD for sure because he was a very private man and didn't discuss his medical problems. I do know that he was a non-smoker and his children said that he did suffer a great deal with acid reflux.

Anyway, I know there is some concern that taking a PPI for more than a year can cause hip fractures, however according to my GI, the study that came to that conclusion had several flaws and thus a new study is underway. In the meantime, I personally would rather protect my esophagus and worry about hip fractures later. When I take a PPI I do make sure to take an extra calcium supplement.

Also, I have LC and cannot correlate it to taking PPI's......although I have never had to take one for any length of time. I have recently taken a PPI for a month and that is the longest I have ever taken one.

Before I ever was diagnose with LC, I had only taken a PPI for a couple of weeks and that was about 3 or 4 years before I developed LC.

Tex, my dear man, thank you for the link about apple cider vinegar. I read that recently when I was doing some research on ACV. I tried the ACV (Bragg's) for about a week......and I even reported on here that at first I thought it might be helping......but it was short term.....and actually since I had already been taking a PPI for a couple of weeks.....I think it was the PPI and not the ACV that actually helped.

But again, as I have mentioned already......I found out that Sanctura can cause GERD and since I have discontinued taking it I went off my acid reflux has almost entirely gone. I have not taken a PPI or Zantac for probably almost 2 or 3 weeks. I have taken an anti-spasmodic pill a couple of times, but not in almost a week.

Tex.....

I meant to put this in my previous post......just wanted to know "how you been doing?!!!"
Hopefully, you're feeling "fit as a fiddle" these days and have been able to return to your normal schedule.
Even if your body hasn't gotten back to where you want it to be.....the surgery didn't adversely affect your mind.....it's still sharp as a razor!
Take care,

Sorry, for some reason, I was thinking that you had tried simply taking a teaspoon full of ACV each day. Yes, I saw your post about the Sanctura, and that was good detective work, linking your symptoms to the Sanctura.

I'm doing well, and I'm pretty much back to being as normal as I'll ever be, I suppose. My GP gave my recovery the stamp of approval, yesterday, so I must be recovered. I'm not yet going full throttle on my work schedule, but that's mostly because there's no need to be, since this is the slow time of year for my business, anyway.

I've found that by not drinking anything with meals, the consistency of my stomal output is much improved, (significantly less liquid), and if I eat a chunk of aged cheddar cheese before bedtime, I only have to get up once during the night, to change the pouch. (Fortunately, I'm not casein intolerant). Life is good.

Thanks for asking.

Hi Gabes,

I'm suspicious that you may have developed another intolerance since your GERD popped up out of nowhere. Are you still eating soy/legumes?

For many of us our symptoms took a few months to unfold. I first got off gluten and felt better . . .and then bad again, so I got off dairy. I felt good again and then started to get bad GERD and discovered it was soy. Are you keeping a food journal to try to determine offending foods? It took about 5 months for all of my problem foods to become clear to me. Even if you did enterolab testing and soy (or something else) came back OK, you could still have a problem with it. GERD is most often caused by release of pro-inflammatory mediators, which enterolab doesn't measure.
