Hi Janet!!
From my experience while taking Asacol & Entocort, NO you don't have to wean off the Asacol if you switch to Entocort.
At one point my GI had me taking 9 Asacol a day and 3 Entocort. After wondering why I was still having the D, I researched and found out that the Asacol had dairy in it and it was the med causing the D problem for me. I remember stopping it right before I was scheduled to catch a flight to Florida. 2 days in Florida and off of the Asacol and I went back to having normal stools.

Dear Traveler,
Just wanted to say welcome. As you probably have read Entocort is usually a pretty effective drug, but if you have not already done so, you will need to look into diet to really deal with MC. It is very late here in Hong Kong, so I wish you "good night". I am sure others will post soon.
All the best, Ant

I was just diagnosed with CC this week and just started the Entocort yesterday. I take 3 capsules (3mg each) in the morning. I have taken 2 doses and already have noticed a reduction in the GI pain, and my FMS pain has all but vanished. Its too early to say if the D has slowed down but I have noticed that things are calmer in GI land.
Stick with it, I have read that sometimes it can take a week or 2 to work, but it does seem to work well for most and appears to be well tolerated.
Best Wishes

I don't remember how long it took for the Entocort to start working.. but once it did.. I wondered if I would be on 3 pills a day forever:) I think I have been on entocort for about 5 years and have been down to one pill a day for over a year.
I can and do eat out. I can and do eat just about anything I want to.. just not a lot of anything that used to trigger massive D.

Entocort
I am taking it now...I started on Friday..I thought it worked instantly...but now I am not so sure. I have had crazy stomach noises and d....but I am use to that. I am hoping in two weeks it will kick in. I am gluten free....I am enoying learning how to eat and cook again. Tonight it is gluten free pizza....with chicken I think it is sinking in...this is my new life. I am so looking forward to having more energy and to stop running to the bathroom.
Blessings!

anytime i see a food item that has gluten and dairy etc the memory of chronic D (and baboon butt and all the other joys) comes to mind and very quickly i no longer want the food!!!!
the transition and retraining of your brain will take a while..... each step of improvement is an achievement and worth celebrating

Pizza
I used a gluten free udi pizza crust....it was delicious....organic chicken breast stir fried in a bit of olive oil....with a sprinkle of cheese...since so far, I don't have a dairy allergy. Believe me, I am listening to my body...I know that next item to go is diary (If it must).

When I was trying to control CC with diet alone, I became a fanatic about reading labels. I never realized how many other ingredients were in just about everything.
When I first was diagnosed with CC and then found this site and started to listen to my body I was very careful about everything I put in my mouth. I constantly cooked to make sure there were no additives. Bought only things I knew were safe to cook.
One major problem for us was cost. My husband had lost his job soon after CC started. Our grocery bills spiraled out of control because of all of the special ingredients. The diaper cost was also a new burden on the budget.
By the time I decided to try entocort.. our insurance copay for it was by far the least expensive way to control my CC. Our copay at the time was $50 a month. Our grocery and diapers bills were astronomical by comparison.
I don't know if anyone has ever discussed cost in dealing with CC or not...

Cost
I am lucky my co-pay is $9.....I cannot believe how expensive Entocort is, I was shocked! How do people do it with no insurance??
My grocery bill had increased as well. I try to purchase the produce that are in season...it is usually less expensive. I have purchased gluten-free flour and quinoa from Costco. I have not used the flour, except to make a few batches of cookies...which I threw away (they tasted horrible). I am learning to like quinoa. My famliy does not eat red meat....which helps some with the budget. I purchased gluten free pasta made from rice, which I will try later this week. It was expensive. I have enjoyed searching for recipes and reading all the libray books I can on gluten free eating and tips. I am glad my family is supportive.

While I was trapped in the house for about three years (within feet of the john but never quite making the trip fast enough).. cooking only safe things to eat.. I didn't realize the problems that might be created once I could leave the house
As I have said before, my choice to go to entocort came after the hurricane evacuation 5 years ago. We were stuck in traffic for 25 hours.. I had nothing to eat or drink but water.. afraid to try anything else because I knew I would fill my diapers.. and cleaning up that mess in a line of traffic inside my car was not a pleasant thought. Then there were the days we stayed away and I lived on canned tuna and chicken packed in water only. I drank a lot of water. We couldn't eat out and I couldn't cook or know how to locate foods I could cook if I was even able to cook. The day we got home I made an appointment with the gastro doc who had allowed me the freedom to find my own way..saying whenever I wanted to try asacol and or entocort he would be there.
Slowly I got my life back. I did the best I could with gluten, dairy, soy free while I started on entocort.. then slowly after the entocort worked.. I tried adding back other things I had missed being able to eat. I could work in the yard again. I could talk to my neighbors.. something i hadn't been able to do in three years.. always afraid I would fill by pants mid sentence...LOL
