Watch for Erratic Behaviour of The Board

Post by tex »

I just installed the "Guest Sessions" modifications, which will supposedly allow the search engine "bots" to index this site. Since it involved somewhat extensive manual changes to the code in one of the folders, it wouldn't be impossible for me to have keyed in a wrong character. This code affects the way that navigational URLs are formulated.

Therefore, while you are navigating this board, if you find yourself being transported to the wrong destination, please bring it to my attention, so that I can search for the problem. I don't anticipate any problems, but then I didn't expect any with the last code change either. LOL.

The change shouldn't have any effect on logged-on users, it should only affect anonymous, (or guest), users.

Love,
Tex

Hmmmmmmmm. I got some freaky looking stuff, when I tried to access the admin panel, and in fact, couldn't access it, plus a db error when I tried to log off, so I had to remove that modification. I'll work on it in a day or so, to see if I can find the problem. In the mean time, we'll just have to do without the search engine bots.

Tex

Tex,

Do you think the number of hits we now have will put us pretty high up when the search engines find us?
There seem to be an awful lot of things on MC when I do a Webtv search, but then it's a combination of alot of search engines, so picks up most everything, I would imagine. I've never been able to completely check out all the sites when I run an M.C. search on it.

Good luck. Hope we're up and running without a glitch soon.
This is sure alot of work you've volunteered for, isn't it?
Thanks.

Yours, Luce

Hi Luce,

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that regular member access has any effect on search engine indexing, because none of us goes through a search engine to get here. We couldn't if we wanted to, because we're not listed.

Yes, it's a lot of work, but I thoroughly enjoy it.

Joanna,

You're more than welcome,

Hi Wayne,

Tried logging on a little after 12 last night and received nothing but error messages. This morning everything went well.

Karen,

About mid-afternoon, yesterday, I tried to access the board and received a message that said "Access Denied". That bothered me a lot, and I assumed that the site had been hacked, and someone had removed me as admin, and set themselves up as admin and then locked the board. Sooooo, I loaded a utility program I have, that allows me to access the database externally, just in case of a little emergency such as that. It would allow me to remove a hacker from the admin list, and re-install myself as admin.

When I got the same message again, that's when my hair stood up. LOL. That was my ace-in-the-hole, and it didn't work. So, rather than beating my head against the wall, I decided to call my ISP, where no one seemed to be aware of any problem. After checking a while though, a tech assistant finally admitted that they had a server problem a little earlier, and had to "reset some things".

Anyway, after he reset the server permissions to my website, in a few minutes it was back to normal. It's possible that the same thing may have happened again during the night. Sorry about the problem. As you say, everything seems to be ok, today.

Love,
Wayne

P S Thanks, MJ.

Yes, I tried to enter the site (I am always logged on) at one point yesterday and got a message that the site was not available and to try again later. I did and it was fine.

Thanks, Wayne,

Love,

Well then, Wayne, perhaps when we are open for "bidness" we should pretend to be a visitor every now and then to get our numbers up! Ha!
I'm so dumb at this kind of stuff that I don't even know if that's possible.

Hi Maggie,

Yep, I've had that "hobby" for many a year. Some folks consider it a disgusting habit, but I figure it's much better than chewing tobacco, or dipping snuff. LOL. And as you know, there's nothing like a good cigar.

You know, people say strange things to try to convince you to give up practices like that. When I broke an arm, a couple of years ago, the doctor in the ER, who set it, noticed the cigars in my pocket, and commented that I would need to give them up, because "it would take longer for the broken arm to heal, if I smoked cigars".

Yeah, right! They removed the splint a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. LOL. Why do they say irrational things like that? How much of a delay in healing could it cause? Maybe 10 or 15 minutes?
