My LC and Remission

Post by Issy »

First, let me make this clear: while my LC seems to be in remission, I do not consider myself "cured."

Second, I have never stated on this forum that I have obtained remission of my LC without any diet restrictions or the use of medication.

What I have stated in previous posts is:
Unlike most who post on this forum, I can tolerate gluten, soy or dairy without any problems.

However, after developing LC, I could no longer tolerate all the high fiber foods that had been an integral part of my diet. Thus I had to modify my diet by cooking all the vegetables and most fruits that I consume. There are some vegetables that I no longer eat...raw or cooked.

Unlike many on this site, I managed to obtain remission without the use of Entocort or other prescription medications.

As a diabetic who has successfully managed diabetes for over thirty years through diet and exercise alone, I am extremely cautious of any medications thus I chose to not take Entocort.

I did take Bentyl for a few months and it was highly effective, but the drowsiness was a problem, so I did not take it very long.

For the better part of the past three years I have most often used Immodium to help control my LC.

The turning point for me in my recovery was when I began taking the probiotic Align.

After only a month, I began to notice a huge improvement in the frequency and quality of my stools. They began to look as normal as they did prior to developing LC.

I have been taking Align for about 8 months and I rarely have diarrhea now.
The last incident of D was over a month ago and a one time event.

Recently, I mentioned to my GI that I was taking Align and thought he might want to pass my good report on to his other patients. To my surprise he mentioned that several of his LC patients had said the same thing. In fact he is gives out free samples in his office.

I highly recommend Align to anyone who doesn't think "most of my assumptions are wrong" as one extremely rude person posted about me recently on this site.

Joe, thank you for your kind remarks. My comments about "certain people" on this forum who think they know more than most GI's was not intended towards you. I think some of the replies I got from my previous post show who some of these "know-it-all" are.

I have many family members and friends who are highly dedicated physicians and while every profession has it's fair share of undesirables, it's really pathetic to read some of these angry posts regarding what their GI did or didn't do for them.

It seems to really upset "some" people on this forum if their GI doesn't agree with that "other" GI who is making a very handsome little income off of their stools tests.

The bottom line is we are all adults and we have to take responsibility for ourselves. Our GI (actually any doctor) can only do but so much. If you don't like their recommendations then move on to someone who will tell you exactly what you want to hear.

My father was a doctor, Issy. He was a pediatrician and later became an allergist.

You'll see I now like my GI here http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewt ... ght=hugged

I did NOT say most of your assumptions were wrong.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor and don't play one on TV.

Thanks for your reply Issy. Yes, many of us have had to restrict fiber as well. I consider Immodium a med, even if it is OTC, so I guess you have used meds to control your D. I opted for no drugs, not even OTC, and have managed with diet alone (achieved remission in 7 months).

I also use a probiotic. Align is a good probiotic, but many have had trouble tolerating any probiotics.

As for the GIs, we'll just have to agree to disagree. The last GI I had was very sarcastic. When I told him about my food intolerances he asked "Well, can you tolerate water?" No matter how you slice it or dice it, that was unprofessional and he is an insensitive jerk that got paid for making that remark. My first GI was no better. When I was having a mast cell reaction to the bowel prep before my colonoscopy I called to talk to him about it. He put his nurse on the phone and she said "The doctor said you are just anxious - keep drinking the MoviPrep". I came to this forum to vent about both situations and got support. Glad your experiences were better. But I must say Issy, your GI didn't offer anything more than my GIs (probiotic, bentyl, immodium, low fiber diet), he/she just may have been a little more professional.
