Lactose Intolerance Is Probably Just In Your Head

Post by tex »

Yep, that's what the researchers who wrote this article claim. According to them, more than half the people who claim to be lactose intolerant, are not. Clearly, those individuals must be faking all the bloating and diarrhea that they get every time they drink milk. The researchers didn't bother to consider casein intolerance as a possible cause, but then, they obviously weren't interested in discovering any reasons for the mistaken beliefs by the other half of the subjects, that they were lactose intolerant - the researchers were mainly interested in proving how smart they were, by proving that so many people who think that they are lactose intolerant, are not.

So why didn't the researchers check out the possibility of casein-sensitivity, while they were at it? It would have been a very simple addition to the test, and the results would have been very enlightening. I'm guessing that they were simply too dumb to even think of it. :whatever:

it might be in my head - but my guts have definately been telling me their thoughts for the last 10 years or more (well well before MC diagnosis)

have lactose - get D
dont have lactose - no D

i dont need a study to prove that one to me!

I have not had milk or ice cream for 12 years, I guess that's all in my head too, including all the pain and discomfort when I eat something with cheese in it that I did not know was even in the dish

WMMB Directors Approve FY2011 Budget
April 13, 2010

MADISON, WI – The Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) approved its Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget during its April board meeting. The $31,405,000 budget total is $1,840,000 larger than the previous year reflecting a record level of milk production in the state. The budget will support WMMB's in-state and national dairy promotion, marketing and education programs from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.
Is this one small example of what we are up against......... Milk has got to be "good for you" and those that think otherwise must be "crazy"......look how much money is involved.

Ant,

Virtually every agricultural commodity has it's own marketing advocacy board, that runs ads, and lobbies legislators, health organizations, etc., in order to promote sales of the commodity. The oldest, (and one of the most powerful), is the various milk boards. These boards collect a government-mandated percentage of total sales from every producer in their "coverage" region. These producers are forced to pay this "tax", whether they agree with the principles of the board, or not, and they pay whether they derive any benefits from the expenditure of their money, or not. Wisconsin is only one state. Imagine how much all the milk boards all across the country collect, (each and every year), to allow them to promote dairy products.

Another very influential group is the soybean boards. They have millions of dollars of government-mandated "tax" money available to spend on ads convincing us, (and the government, and the medical community), how beneficial soybean products are for us. Imagine what all this money could do if it were channeled into some useful purpose. It boggles the mind.

This is just one example of literally zillions of government-mandated programs, that are unnecessary, inappropriate, and completely out of control. Is it any wonder that the country/world is experiencing a financial crisis, and a problem with continually escalating health issues?

According to my family doc ... as we get older many get less tolerant to dairy products. He has been a family doc a LONG time.. he doesn't have to rely on studies.. he has his own experience with generations of families:)

I am just catching up on posts for the past week or so--my computer was attacked by a virus, as in Trojan Horses, so after a trip to the computer hospital I am back and running with state of the art security!
I was asked today if I can eat sheep or goat cheese, so thought this thread was as good a place to get an answer as any. Is there the same type of casein in these cheeses? Google research was inconclusive, hope someone has an answer. The rice cheese is, well, what can I say. It doesn't taste much like cheese. Thanks, Beverly

Hi Beverly,

It's good to hear that your computer is up and running again.

There's no truly definitive answer to your question. If you're casein-intolerant, then there is a good chance that sheep or goat cheese will also cause you to react, because the casein that they contain, while different from the primary casein protein in cow's milk, has peptides that are very similar to the peptides that we react to, in cheese made from cow's milk.

Still, it's not impossible that it might work for you - it boils down to a trial and error process. A few casein-sensitive members have tried cheese made from alternate types of milk, but I'm not aware of anyone who has been successful in finding one that they did not react to, (to date, at least).

Trying to get our life back is all trial and error. Whatever works for you... is the right answer! I have learned to never stay with a doctor who isn't flexible and willing to try to find out what works for me. And once we knew what I could and could not tolerate was careful to make sure any medication I had to take wouldn't cause disasterous side effects because of how it works or the "fillers" in the medication.
