Question about Enterolab tests
Well, I finally got my test kit in the mail. Whooo-eee! In the instructions it says " If you are currently using any oil supplements please refrain from taking more than 1000 milligrams (per day) of all combined supplements for 7 days prior to collection." By this I think they mean vitamins such as A and E, but am not sure. Did anyone else wonder what exactly this means and perhaps call them to clarify? If so what did they say? I had hoped to send them out Monday morn but am afraid , it if does mean the E and A vitamins, that I wil have to wait another week, as I have been taking 800 IU of E and 10,000 IU of A, though I have no idea what that is in milligrams.... As I wrote this I just realized IU is not milligrams...
Confused,
Linda .

Hi Linda,
That instruction was not with the kit when I used it, several years ago. I'm pretty sure that refers to actual oil supplements, such as omega -3 sources, (flax seed oil, fish oil, borage oil, etc.), or things such as aloe vera, mineral oil, or olive oil, taken as a liquid supplement.
Incidentally, are you aware that vitamin A antagonizes the action of vitamin D? If you're taking any significant amount of vitamin A, you might want to review Dr. Cannell's observations on vitamin A supplements. He generally recommends no vitamin A supplements at all, but for someone with an IBD, or celiac disease, a certain amount of supplemental vitamin A may be beneficial, since either too much or too little can be harmful. The entire article at the following link is devoted to it:

Unless you're taking doses of the oils mentioned above, you should be good to go for "sample collecting".

oil supplements and Enterolab test
For future reference for others, I called Enterlab to clarify the "oil supplement" question I had about the directions. The person who answered did not really know if this included vits A and E or anything about how ml. might translate into International Units. She suggested that I just refrain from taking my A & E supplements and not send my samples in for another week, to be on the safe side.
Sigh!

Linda,
You can certainly do that if you wish, but obviously, a new hire must have answered the phone, because Phyllis, the lab manager, would have certainly known the answer. As far as I am aware, no one here has ever been concerned about that issue in the past, so unless I were "downing shots of oil", way above and beyond what most people do, on a regular schedule, I would ignore that issue completely, and send in a sample. Most of us have been taking vtamins when we sent in samples.
A year or two ago, it took 2 weeks to get test results from Enterolab, after the sample was shipped. Now, it takes 3 weeks. If you wait another week, you are looking at a month, before you learn your results.

I know I will have to wait that much longer now, Tex...beleive me, I havte to live like this one second longer than I have to! :-( I debated whether to just ignore what she said because I knew she did not know the answer and was just guessing, but, as she said, it is a lot of money to go and screw it up. And now it is too late to send it this week. Not enough time to freeze 24 hours before mailing tomorow morning and it must be shippped on a Monday or Tuesday.

Wow! $90.00 shipping!
Ouch! Thanks for the heads up, Maxine. We live very near the border ( 6 km) and I am hoping to slip down across into the US and send it via Fed Ex from there. How long ago did you get yours done?

Linda,
Aren't you concerned about getting caught transporting "toxic waste" across the border, and creating an international incident?
That's a good idea - I'm sure that the cost of getting an overnight shipment through customs is a major part of the cost.

After ten plus years of this I am not easy to offend or embarrass! and toxic it definitley can be... my poor daughter (when she was at home in the early years before I recognized I was casein intolerant ) and now, sometimes still, my poor partner !
