Attn Washington / Oregon residents!
We are leaving next week Friday and will be gone about a month. I don’t know how often I will have access to a computer to get mail and check in here. So if you don’t hear from me you will know why. I also have trouble seeing the small text on the I-POD I will have with me.
We are driving to Washington, Oregon, and Victoria BC where we will do some sightseeing and then on June 6th we begin a cruise to Alaska returning to Seattle, WA on June 13. Then it’ more sightseeing in Portland OR and who knows what else my DH has planned. Returning to Phoenix around the 23rd of June.
I am not concerned about meals while on the cruise ship as they sent me a list of all the GF items they have on board. Mainly I will just stick to the basic foods like I do at home, GF cereal, rice or quinoa, protein, vegetables and fruit. And still eliminate dairy and soy.
My concern is finding places to eat while on the road and when we get off the ship in Alaska for our shore excursions. I have purchased and packed a box full of items and will have a cooler filled with items I can eat in the car or motels, however, if I run out, or if I want to shop for GF items while in the NW states I don’t know what big stores are available in that area that carry a lot of GF items.
CAN ANYONE IN WASHINGTON OR OREGON HELP ME?
Here I shop mainly at Sprout’s Farmers Market about two miles from me. All this month they have 25% off all of their GF products. I really stocked up with staples. They publish a booklet showing all the GF items they carry in the store. Somewhere I thought I read that they carry over 2,000 GF items in their stores. If anyone lives in the SW area of the US I encourage you to check them out. Six new stores are opening in California and one in Colorado.

Hi Charlotte,
Here is a link to a blog in Portland: http://graindamaged.blogspot.com/
If you scroll down there is a list of local bakeries/restaurants. I've only been to the New Cascadia, but their rustic bread is great, wasn't terribly impressed with their pizza. If you will have a GPS with you, use it to find Trader Joes, Whole Foods, New Seasons or Market of Choice. All of these stores have a large selection of GF items and with the exception of Trader Joes, the rest all have deli's where you can order fresh GF meals. Portland is a real food town, we are known for it. There are Saturday Markets all over the place where you can buy organic produce on the weekends.
I'd be very surprised if there isn't a Seattle blog as well. Seattle is a bit more difficult and confusing to maneuver around than Portland is, as it is much larger. Both Seattle and Portland and points in-between are beautiful. You have to go to Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, and the Columbia Gorge. Puget Sound has many beautiful areas that you will see when you come back from AK and will likely want to explore. The Olympic forest is stunning. N. of Seattle there isn't much between it and BC and I imagine Linda could fill you in on BC.
If you speak Dutch, I can lead you to a blog our friends from Amsterdam kept of a similar trip they made in the US and Canada in '08.
Sounds like a great trip.

Resolved MC symptoms successfully w/L-Glutamine, Probiotics and Vitamins, GF since 8/'09. DX w/MC 10/'09.
Up here in WA, Safeway usually has a pretty good range of GF foods. Not great, but OK. Also have a decent organic section. If you are in a good sized town, there should be a Trader Joes and you'll have good luck there. In the Seattle area look for the Food Co-op--it is wonderful and should be an easy cab ride from the cruise ship.
Most large cities will also have their own food co-ops and there are health food stores everywhere, but they tend to be pretty expensive.
I believe you'll be able to find GF and DF products throughout WA and Oregon w/o too much trouble.
Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on places to shop for GF items while in the Washington / Oregon area. I wrote them down and will keep them handy. I was surprised to see you mention Safeway. We have a Safeway a block from us and their GF food section consists only of a small bookcase of foods next to the pharmacy.

Hopefully when you leave Seattle it will not be totally at night, as you should pass thru the beautiful San Juan Islands on your way to BC. These and the Canadian San Juans are some of the most beautiful areas in the NW. (Of course I live on an island where the ferry leaves for the San Juans, so I am a bit biased).
Have fun.
