I've been wondering the same thing. Here in the states, farmers call grain sorghum, "milo", but I'm pretty sure that's not she's talking about. Aussies definitely have a more interesting vocabulary than the rest of the English-speaking world.

Yeah the Aussie dialect is interesting. I am still trying to figure out the word 'chuffed', in context in probably means excited happy etc.. Although Gabes does a pretty good job. In my travels there there were a few blokes that would switch to Aussie Speak to try and confuse me; initially it did, but eventually I understood the secret language.

My late ex-husband, who was from Northern Ireland, used to say "chuffed" all the time. My daughter even used it this weekend and we all laughed because she said she has never used it before and she was surprised at herself. It is a great word; I love it! I've always taken it to mean very pleased (with yourself?).

Hokey Pokey ice cream
originated in New Zealand (best thing the kiwi's created) it is vanilla ice cream with honeycomb
Milo - is a power based on cocoa but full of sugar! you can mix it with cold milk, or with hot water. I used to sprinkle it onto ice cream, crunchy chocolate topping!
Chuffed -yep is irish origin, happy, content,
as mention in some posts earlier in the year, there is aussie slang and then there is the words we pick up from the other cultres.
my other dialect is Papua New Guinea Tok Pigeon, It has latin basis but the sentance structure is mixed up!

tok pigeon: pek pek beloung buluma cow
there is also gabisms, which I mainly use at work

firstly i worked for a mining company that had mines in Papua New Guinea (PNG). I travelled there for one day meetings etc there was one instance I spent 8 weeks up there researching anomolies for a taxation audit. so i became friends with the locals in the office, had dinner with their family,
then i was part of a company that was doing under water mineral research in PNG. I had to help train the PNG staff so i quickly learnt tok pigeon.
it is an amazing place, there are some people that have never seen a computer! they still live a traditional tribal culture, head of the tribe can have multiple wives. I remember quite often children in their mums arms or bulum bag would reach out and pat my straight fair hair. they were fascinated with it!
and the geography is amazing!! i stood within 100m of an active volcano!
when we were recruiting staff and then when you were rostering them for shifts, you can not put a highlands person with a coastal person as they will not work together, and there are other tribes that have been in war for thousands of years so you can not even hire people from both tribes.
i wont deny it - it can be a dangerous place (equiv of jamiaca) violence can break out at anytime for what ever reason. and Australians there on business are targets for crime (mugging, voilence) we had strict policies about where you can and cant go, curfews, ie have to be in the hotel by dark or have a security escort etc.
STD and Aids is almost as bad as South Africa. these were introduced by white man, but in PNG men are men, and with the multiple wives girlfriends tradition, aids is spreading fast. the women that get Aids think they have had a witchcraft spell put on them. They dont have the education to know it is sexually transmitted. Malaria, TB, Choleria are also serious issues.
