relation eye problems - mc?
Another thing I have been wondering about for a while now is, is there a relationship between eye problems and MC. Why this question. Since last year, I think even before the MC started (about 1 -2 months before) I saw my pcp because my eyes were irritated. It was not infected. He could see or find anything.
it is not really a huge problem, but when I use make up (foundation, powder, some type of mascara) after an hour or two my eyes get irritated. I have to take everything of and put eye drops for irritated eyes (just an over the counter medicine). So I stopped wearing make up. Also with some facial creams, sun creams (especially the ones that work for 8 hrs) I get irritated eyes.
Does anyone recognize this. Is it MC related or just a coincidence.

Yes it is a non-GI symptom of MC. There seems to be a relationship with Uveitis, episcleritis and Iritis basically irritation and swelling of different parts of the eye with MC (and even crohns disease). I have had those symptoms about 7 times prior to my diagnosis with MC. I was referred to a ophthalmologist who immediately put me on prednisone eye drops. The swelling if left untreated long enough can result in permanent eye damage.
If this is still an issue I would recommend seeing a eye doctor

Another type of vision problem that can accompany MC is drusen, which is a form of macular degeneration. Both Shirley and I have this issue, which is probably autoimmune in origin.

Harma,
I don't know if it is MC related or not, but I had one bout of conjunctivitis after another a few years ago, before I did a massive round of antibiotics that could have killed MAP.
I really need to ask if there is a test to show if I have the markers for ever having had MAP, as the antibiotics I took were for MRSA and the blood test I asked for that would have shown the markers for my ever having had MRSA were negative.

thanks for the replies. They frighten me a little, especially your's joe. At the moment I have no problems, me eyes are not infected, not red or extreme dry or irritated. They only get irritated if they get in contact with certain cremes, make up and that kind of stuff. For a while I cound't even rub my eyes with my fingers (also the same irritation reaction). While I am writing about this, that also got better lately.
In your case, joe, what were your symptoms, could you actually see something different in your eyes, like red or swollen.
And what were your symptoms tex?

Harma,
I can imagine that researching this can be scary, but I'd just like to add further information to my above post.
I wore contacts for years. I had a traumatic detachment of the vitreus humor in one eye because of an injury. My father went blind because of glaucoma when I was a kid, so vision is an issue for everyone in my family, although the MD's claim that his vision loss was related to a car accident where he had head injuries when I was five.
I still have a floater that is constant since I whacked my eyeball, but I only "see" it if I think about it, my brain filters it out 99.9% of the time. I had needed glasses since I was about 20. My vision has had a complete turnaround in the last year and at my last exam to renew my drivers license - having been GF - my vision is now 20-20 - I don't need glasses anymore to drive or at any time.

count me in for this one. 2.5 years ago i got a 'strange' keratitis. and at the same time i was having adrenal cortisol issues. I was on predisone drops for quite a while, couldnt drive for about 4 weeks, as I struggled with guaging distance.
(couldnt read, or use a computer, had to watch the TV with the brightness turned right down and wear sunglasses)
i saw opthomology professors and saw immunologists and no one could figure out what was happening. opthomology said it was immune, immune said it was opthomology.
the Opthomologists were a bit bamboozled as they couldnt figure out why i got it and why it didnt respond to treatment (instead of 10 days it took me 6 weeks to get rid of it)
now i have the MC diagnosis and the information gained from this site, I am pretty sure it was a phase of the MC no way of knowing 100%
I have not been able to wear mascara since this time.
the symptoms were it was like a bad glue eye (conjunctivitis), swollen, irritated, blinking felt like sandpaper on my eye, i could not handle glare or bright lights and i gave up driving as i was struggling with gauging distance in the traffic and my balance was slightly out.

Gabes,
Your eye-glue comment is exactly what I had. I would wake up in the morning with a pile of it, my eyelids practically glued shut, and I always tested positive for conjunctivitis when I actually saw a Dr. for this. I can only guess that it was that the test showed some sort of bacteria there and that's as far as they went.
I was having huge problems driving at night, a sort of night blindness. This has all gone away since I've been gluten free and this is a big deal for me, as I most often work sunrise to sunset and am on the road in the AM, in the dark, trying to find a location I've never been to before and it's been scary in the past.
All of these symptoms pretty well disappeared after I did my antibiotic regimen for MRSA, which would have likely killed or lessened a MAP infection. I really need to ask my PCP if there is a test that could show the markers for MAP, as I don't have the markers for MRSA.
More and more I believe that MAP is key to so much in those of us w/MC.

Harma when my eyes flare up they are quite blood-shot (usually one at a time), very painful and constantly watering. Initially they thought it was an infection but medications and resultant testing did not show an infection. That then moved the testing to look at autoimmune conditions and the treatment with prednisone 1% eye-drops.

Dear Harma,
Several years prior to being diagnosed w/ MC, I developed episcleritis in my left eye only. Opthomologist prescribed prednisone eye drops which cleared up the problem. I have found that using lubricating eye drops once or twice a day seems to decrease the attacks. Eye doctor told me it definitely was autoimmune and he saw it equally in males and females of all ages. Recently, my middle daughter has a similar siege. Was treated at Johns Hopkins eye institute, supposedly one of the best facilities in the US. Doctors said they had no clue what was wrong with her and they hoped it would not reoccur. Go figure. I am trying to get her to go GF. She is thinking about it. Hope you continue to feel better. Sheila

Harma,
I get the same symptoms that you refer to, where my eyes often become irritated, (a burning sensation), and I have to wipe them with a clean tissue, (using my fingers just seems to make them worse). Using OTC rewetting eye drops seems to help, if I have them available, at the time.
The drusen, though, are different. They are tiny yellow or white accumulations of extracellular material that build up in the back of the eye, (in an area known as Bruch's membrane). When an optholmologist dilates my eyes, and looks into them with a scope, the drusen appear as scattered spots. IOW, the back of my eyes look like a target that has been shot with a load of hundreds of birdshot pellets. The drusen limit the amount of light that reaches the back of my eye, so that if I don't have good, normal light available, my vision acuity suffers significantly, and I have to wear glasses, to read fine print, in less than ideal light. Otherwise, with good light, my vision is pretty much normal.
I have had minor conjunctivitis a few times, but it normally is not a problem for me. We have several members, though, who have had pretty serious issues with it at times.

Harma,
I have had that same reaction to face creams. If I get certain ones anywhere near my eyes they burn and water and feel horrible. It is usually the expensive creams, the ones to "take the wrinkles away". I have gone back to the cheapest, good old Nivea face cream and it does not do that.

everybody thanks for your replies. I don't think that there is anything at this moment I have to worry about (considering my eyes). I don't have an infection. Only they get irritated with the wrong creams, chlorine for the swimming pools. Funny you have the same Linda. I am using now Clinique ,the yellow stuff (or something like dramatically different moistening lotion bladibla) and crème de choc from Payot. But one of those other strange things I develloped over the last 8-9 years.
And like wise gabes, so often I have been reading here things for the last 8 months, realizing that so much other (minor by oh so irritating) health issues were mc related. Actually I think there are gluten related. It is like you have been intoxicating your body for years. I got so used so used the mental and psychical condition coming along with it, that I thought it was normal. This is the way I am, live is. Not realizing it was not normal and there was something wrong.
