Problems again...still?

Post by Mars »

Hi everyone!

We had a wonderful time at our cookout today. The weather was a bit chilly but sunny most of the day. Enjoyed time with my two sisters and their families.

Here is my menu eaten today which resulted in extreme pains in my lower left side and explosive D within 1 hour of eating:

1 hamburger - no bun
1 hot dog - no bun
raw veggies - green peppers, green onion, cucumber
spoonful of ranch dressing for the veggies
backed beans with hamb, catsup, onion
potato salad with mayo, salt/pepper, relish, mustard
Lays chips

I came home a took a 3 hour nap and felt better when I woke up but still didn't want to eat dinner. I made myself eat some leftover snap beans with potato and ham (Yummy!)

Don't know what's going on here. Aching and fatigued again too.

Wish I knew "whasss up"? Tired of feeling sick and tired.

I am trying so hard with this diet and trying to eat more often in smaller quantities but seem to be no better after a week and a half. Actually, some of the old problems seem to be returning.

Anyone with some insight or suggestions would be most welcome!

Tomorrow I am planning on having BBQ spareribs on the grill. Hopefully they will settle ok. Been waiting on them all weekend!

Hi Mars

So sorry you are still having D. Sounds like me when I just stopped gluten. What worked for me is to really keep it simple. 2 boiled eggs in the AM, 2 slices of turkey with gluten free mustard for lunch & pureed chicken soup with carrots, squash & chicken for supper. Rice snaps with fruit sweetened jam for snacks. I did that for 2 weeks & then started to introduce other foods. Also found I was egg intolerant from Dr. Fine & stopped the morning eggs. I also had no additive baby food (fruits & veggies) in the car for a snack. The raw veggies were probably too harsh & potato salad maybe too rich. I know it's discouraging but you are trying so hard, I know you'll get it. Healing light around you. Love & light, Rita

Sorry you are feeling so bad, Mars.
I don't know if you did all the cooking..........I'm assuming you didn't, so even though I'm not GF I'm going to take a guess at all the things that COULD have gluten in them:
Hot Dog
Ranch Dressing
Catsup
Mayo
Mustard
Also, others have said that they can't tolerate raw veggies and some have said beans.

I have no idea what actually caused your problem today. I'm thinking that maybe you need to go on a very bland - few items - diet for a week (guessing about the time frame) then start introducing things one at a time and see how you feel.

Would it be possible for you to try that? If not right now, at some time in the future?

Wishing you the best...

Whaaaaaa

I am afraid I may have to do that to narrow down the problems. I have only eliminated obvious gluten. Bread, wheat, oats, etc.

I will eat the ribs tomorrow and begin eating bland on Tuesday.

Thanks for the uplifting encouragement! I need it because this has become discouraging for me. I try to have a good attitude and keep trudging forward.

This is so new to me. I have only been "aware" of my intake of foods for a little over a week. I have made great strides and read the information about after elimination you sometimes go back to the "beginning" in terms of symptoms. Doesn't make it any easier does it?

I WON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!

Shirley has made some very wise suggestions but I might add that the chips may even be contaminated with gluten in that some manufactures coat their lines with wheat flour to keep them from sticking. This has been a matter of debate but something to look out for. I seem to have a problem with the oil they fry the chips in. (Sigh) I probably said this before but your constant attention will soon bring results.

To your continued recovery.

Hi Margie,

I can't add anything to what's been said already. Shirley is definitely ready to go gluten free (Thumbs up, Shirley - you know it all)

I would stay away from the beans too - just because all legumes are known to cause problems in us with MC. (canned beans can certainly have gluten too).

Eating plain is the best solution - no sauces, dressings, and dips except for the ones you make or are sure of the ingredients.

I hope you feel better already. Soon you will have a much better grip on your diet - you are working so hard at it; it's going to pay off

Karen

Mars,

I know how hard this is. We are struggling with the same issues with Emily. Maybe AI should start her food Journal here too.

Hi Margie,

Yup, as the others said, I'd vote for hidden gluten in one of those items, or the raw veggies and beans. Green onions can cause problems for some. I've never been a fan of beans, so I can't comment much on them.

Hang in there. You are doing well. It is really hard, but you are making steps forward even if some days it doesn't feel like it. Spare ribs should be fine. What are you using for sauce? That would be the thing to watch for. But meat usually digests pretty well.

holdiays are the hardest. I was relatively well prepared for this weekend although I was knowingly cheating Saturday night with S'mores. Didn't get myself any gf gramh crackers. Then Sunday am, I didn't feel like cooking anything so had Fruit Loops (avoided the donuts though :))

Hi ((((((Margie))))),

I'm really sorry to say it, but "eating out" dooms you D. You might as well hold a loaded gun to your head. Somebody had to tell you. (imagine me laughing like a maniac to myself . . . like Inspector Cluseau's boss in the Pink Panther movies) It could have been so many things in the things you listed that you'll go nuts trying to analyze it. I ate potato salad once that was soooo good. I found out later my neighbor's recipe had sour cream in the sauce, and chunks of white cheese in with the potatoes. Who the heck puts dairy products in potato salad!!!I'dliketoknow

As you can tell, I have food issues. "Baggage" some say.
You have ALL my sympathy. Don't worry, you'll get it figured out. Love Marsha

Thanks Marsha!!!!!!!!!!! Consider me shot! LOL (I am crying so hard....boo hoo)

I'll ask in another thread for someone to post the BBQ Sauce receipe on this board. I was planning on using Open Pit Original. I will post the ingredients. (Remember - gluton ONLY is what I am avoiding at this point)

High Fructose
Corn Syrup
Water
Distilled vinegar
Tomatoe puree
Salt
Modified food starch
2% or less of soybean oil
Hydrolyzed corn and soy protein
Spice
Onion Powder
Dehydrated garlic
Artificial Tomato flavor
Natural and artificial flavor
Coloring

Contains Soy (not eliminating this YET)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

When I eat commercial barbacue sauces I notice it a little, but it doesn't kill me. Probably because you don't get large amounts of it.

Hi Mars- sorry your having a rough time but really glad to see you posting and asking questions. Lot's of good information here and SUPPORT. This group helps me on a daily basis with my recovery which has it's ups and downs since I too, am pretty new to dieting but I learn alot everyday by reading threads like this.

Gluten is in so many things, as you know and most likely something you ate did have gluten in it. I think our bodies become sort of pure (maybe not the right word) and after freeing freeing the body of gluten it can become super sensitive to other things such as soy, dairy, or preservatives. A hot dog for example which ususally has lots of preservatives would do me in.

After 6 months of GF alone, I then stopped using soy and dairy because they were a problem for me as well. These days, I eat nothing prepackaged, bottled or canned unless it's natural and I know it's free of my triggers . Sometimes, I get fed up with all of it and depressed-It's a real challenge and a huge life altering committment but your doing great. It will pay off, in the long run.

Mars,

"Modified food starch" contains gluten until proven otherwise! Also suspect are any flavorings and colorings. The only way to know for sure is to call the company and ask. Sometimes they send you free coupons when you call. You are learning to be a gluten detective, aren't you?

Love,

Polly
