Gluten free in Toronto - I felt like a normal person

Post by teagirl »

I got a much needed shot of relief from the terrors of eating out GF and DF yesterday. As you all know, eating out is stressful, full of worries about what they'll do to me, so much so that we rarely eat out, and when we do, it's quite the production, not to mention that there's never any choice for me in 'normal' places.

What I didn't realise is the difference it can make to my outlook to eat in a totally gf place. I felt euphoric! So much to choose from, and everything GF, plus they can tweak things to be vegan and avoid soy, dairy, and other things. It was as though a huge crushing weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I could relax.

We live just north of Toronto, and to avoid rush hour and to run a few errands, we decide to go in the p.m. and have supper somewhere. I did a lot of web research, and found a small cafe that was in the market area of downtown. A review said it was GF and vegan. I called and found it was open until 6 pm and did salads, crepes, and other stuff. Come on down he said. So we did.

It's a tiny shop front, doing mostly lunchtime trade. It has light fare and desserts and "ice cream" as well as ice cream. Young oriental trio, cooking in full view. Lots of selection.

I had ginger squash and beet soup, with a home made lavash cracker. Both were outstanding. Then a buckwheat crepe with 2 types of mushrooms, tomato, basil, spinach, and vegan 'cheese'. So good. Finished up with a coconut mango ice cream. The DH had the same main and dessert but had an awesome salad starter (quinoa, beet, carrot....15 things in it). Said it was divine. He agreed the food was fantastic.

And it wasn't expensive either. Not even $30 (Cdn) for 2 people for 3 courses.

This gem of a place for anyone with GF DF SF etc is the HIBISCUS CAFE, 238 Augusta Ave, Toronto.
I found it at

We're doing an evening class downtown so we're going again next week.

Doing my happy dance - I got to eat out ....

A place like that is quite a lucky discovery. It doesn't get much better than that.

yes - to non PP people it seems everyday, to us to find a place that you can eat out 'safely' and not stress if the meal will be contiminated is like christmas!
and to not have to fully explain the situation re the ingredients, which is what i am doing.....

what a wonderful treat for you and DH.
To all the newbies out there, take note, MC does not have to totally take over your life!
