hey
hey Joe, so my GI wants to do another colonoscopy in a couple of weeks and start me on Imuran. I went to the san diego county fair last friday with my husband and i hate 1 lil fried twinkie and tried to drink 1 beer and i was in and out of the bath room! I don't think all the rides really helped my guts out either. But i was in a lot of pain! but i still had a good time. I'm nervous about trying the imuran tho.... How are you doing? havent gotten on here to much lately been very busy. my squadron is at RIMPAC.

Olivia I know the feeling, I cannot even think of drinking a beer, I used to love a good cold one especially in the summer, now its a sentence to pain and misery.
A few weeks back I mistakenly tried a half of a bagel and to say the least will not try that again. I also have another colonoscopy scheduled for later this summer, and I am not looking forward to that. Overall I am feeling better on the entocort and a fairly strict diet, but am concerned at how I will do off of the entocort.
I am not sure what to say about the Imuran as I personally do not like the idea, but it has been mentioned as a possibility to treat the crohns disease and MC that I am dealing with. It is one of the big guns, and as Tex pointed out it is designed to suppress the immune system somewhat.
Are there other options that you could try first?

Olivia,
Both the twinkie and the beer probably contained gluten, and even if you sought out gluten-free twinkies and beer, the oil that the twinkie was fried in, was probably cross-contaminated with gluten, since that same oil was almost certainly used to fry other foods that contained gluten.
Several members have reported problems with fissures. Here are a couple of examples that I was able to find - there are others, that I couldn't locate.

If you are prone to abscesses, Imuran will almost surely make that problem worse, since it will slowly deactivate your immune system, so that your body will no longer be able to fight infections in a normal manner. That can turn a simple abscess into a life-threatening situation, due to the increased risk of sepsis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Dear Olivia
I agree with Tex on the immune system....
About 12 years ago, after a fall on my behind in a game football I developed an internal abscess near my rectum, which was treated with antibiotics 3 times over about two months before being conquered. Initially the antibiotics were oral and where not enough to knock it out. But the last treatment was a strong antibiotic cocktail administered intravenously over about three sessions. It worked and this avoided a hit or miss surgical procedure. (No fistula had developed so it would have been difficult to locate in surgery).
A years and a half ago, after chronic D had arrived and before MC dx, I developed a large abscess on my forehead, following an insect bite. It had to be treated with antibiotics, topical steroids and removed under the knife.
10 months ago I developed another abscess this time on my figure tip after accidentally burning on a naked flame. It also would only go away after draining the puss and antibiotic injections and topical steroids.
All this can, I believe, be put down to a weakened immune system stemming from malabsorbiton (thus low vitamins and minerals) as well as dealing with gut inflammation.
I now take vitamins and minerals intravenously, to build back my vitamins and mitigate any possible effect of Entocort.
Hope this info helps in some way, Best Ant

Welcome Back Olivia,
I go along with the twinkie and beer thing - not a good idea for your system. No experience with fissures but have read others comment on them and they sound waaaay painful.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Love, Maggie

Hi Faerenech,
You have lots of sympathy from me as I had an anal fissure that just refused to heal many years ago. Ouch, ouch, ouch - way worse than hemorrhoids. Incidentally, I also thought it was hemorrhoids until I finally went to see the doc and got a proper diagnosis. Once I got the diagnosis and a topical ointment (can't remember the name), it did not take very long to heal, so I wish the same for you .
Love,
Kari
