I ended up in the ER again this weekend. I am so sick of this! I haven't been feeling well for quite some time now, but my symptoms got worse starting Friday afternoon. The D was much more frequent, and I was getting up in the middle of the night to go. I haven't done that since before I was diagnosed. Stomach pain was constant and absolutely no breaks! Oh, and I started vomitting. I have always had some nausea, but vomitting has decreased in the past few months.
I called my GI doctor's office and spoke to the provider on call. It was not my Dr., but he informed me to "rest my gut" and he would leave a message to have my Dr. call me on Monday. He also advised me to go to the ER if the pain remained the same or got worse.
I didn't want to go to the hosipital, but a family member gave me no option and took me up there.
Hospital staff gave me IV fluids, phenergan, and pain meds. They did some labs, all within normal limits. They wanted to get a fecal sample, but of course I couldnt give them one. This is what happened last time I went to ER. I went right before they called me back. Plus, I hadn't eaten anything in approximately 27 hours and had probably cleaned my system out.
ER doc wants to run some tests for C-diff, parasites, and some other things.
I was discharged with Prednisone 40 mg once a day for five days and Vicodin if need for a few days.
I was instructed to follow-up with my regular GI doctor on Monday.

Okay, after all that......Here is my question? He instructed me to continue with the Entocort that I have been taking for months now in addition to the Prednisone. I'm freaked out about taking Entocort at all, and I am not thrilled one bit to take another steroid. Has anyone been on both Entocort and Pred at the same time?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry to "hear" that you had such a bad weekend. Yes, one of our members, GrannyH, was taking Entocort when her doctor prescribed Prednisone for a back injury. She had a very adverse reaction, with repeated life-threatening blood pressure spikes, for which she went to the ER many times. Her blood pressure was very erratic, and wouldn't stay stabilized, even with treatment, at first. Her life was in limbo for several weeks. She finally got it out of her system, but she has to take meds for the rest of her life, and now she has heart problems, because of that doctor's mistake.

The problem is not just continuing to take Entocort - it's the residual budesonide already built up in your system. Taking prednisone on top of that, can cause a corticosteroid overdose, with dire consequences.

I'm not trying to say that this is bound to happen to you, because we all have different sensitivities to drugs, and different responses, but corticosteroid overdoses can be very serious, so please be very careful.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I am no expert so all I can do is send you

I think I am right in recalling you thought you might have c-diff still lurking in your system. I hope that is being looked into.

I am sending positive thoughts and praying you are past the worst of this.

The only time I have taken both at the same time was during the transition from pred to Entocort so both doses were low. I would be quite reluctant to take both drugs at the same time unless both were quite low doses. I can't imagine why a doctor would want you on both drugs for an extended time.

I don't plan to take pred again unless I have no choice. I would much prefer Entocort if needed.

Just my opinions.
