My son just returned from a week long camp for kids and teens who are gluten sensitive. The camp is in Texas (near Longview) and is called The Great Gluten Escape. Kids from across the country were there for a week to not worry about food and interact with others just like them. The camp is the 3rd week in July every year - need to sign up early spring as it fills up fast.
After I got sick I did Enterolab testing on my family and my son was highly reactive to gluten and dairy and he also had DQ2 gene, so he's now GF/DF (unsure if he's celiac since we didn't test him before gloing GF). He's also sensitive to corn. I encourage those of you with children to get them tested to avoid future problems - remember your kids will get at least one of your genes and they could be gluten sensitive too. My son had chronic C and asthma before changing his diet - now he's symptom free. He's generally a good sport about his diet, but I thought the camp would be helpful since he doesn't know any other kids who are GF.
He had a GREAT time at camp. They had lots of great activites, nice accomodations and the food was good. We sent some SASEs with him so he could write to us (he's 10 and it was his first time away for such a long time). Here is a letter he wrote:

That camp sounds like fun, and a great way for kids to not feel "different". My daughter-in-law has CD, and both of her kids have been gluten free since birth. My granddaughter is only 6 years old right now, but as she gets older, overnight camp really isn't an option because of the food issues. Day camp works because her lunch can be packed. Hopefully there might be something like your son's camp available closer to Seattle when she gets older.

Oh Mary Beth. Those are the best memories....little notes or letters. He obviously was having a good time but still thinking of you. Enjoy it now because in a few years he will become a "TEENAGER".....OH BOY! LOL He sounds like a sweet boy who loves his mamma.
