GF Ice Cream?

Post by harvest_table »

Hi friends,

I seem to remember reading something about a particular brand and flavor of ice cream that was GF...Hagen Daz Chocolate something?

Anyone know exactly what brand and flavor it is? I've been toying with the idea of "treating" and testing myself with a little. I've been dairy free for the most part for about 6 months- seem to be able to tolerate small amounts of white cheeses.

I figure if I'm going to try a dairy challenge again it may as be with something I'd really enjoy since I haven't eaten ice cream in a year

I find lots of ice creams are gf. I have e-mailed Dreyer's who told me all their ice creams are gf unless there are obvious additions (ie; cookies, cookie dough, etc). I also have several restaurant lists off the internet. From those, I know the following:

Baskin Robbins (verified 1-26-00) "all Baskin Robbin's products were gluten free except those containing cookie, pie, cheesecake, or cake pieces". Also, all their frozen yogurt (except Yogurt Gone Crazy), all sorbets and all sherbets were gf.

DQ (verified 1/2005) vanilla and chocolate soft serve and Misty Slush are gf. Also, the following novelties: Lemon Freez'r, Cherry-Lime Freez'r, DQ Fudge bar, DQ Vanilla orange bar, DQ vanilla fudge bar, DQ raspberry vanilla bar and cherry, grape & lemon-lime StarKiss bars (NOT red, white & blue StarKiss)

McDonald's (verified 3-1-05) choc, strawberry or vanilla Triple Thick Shakes, ice cream sundae's (including nuts) and M&M McFlurry

TCBY (verified Feb, 2005) there is a huge list of "safe" products there, along with a note that their maltodextrin flavoring in all nonfat/no-sugar-added flavors is derived from corn and contains no gluten.

Wendy's (verified 1/2005) Fresh Fruit bowl and low-fat strawberry flavored yogurt as well as their Frosty are "safe"

Hope some of this is helpful. I guess if I were just trying out something (like dairy), I'd go out for it rather than buying a carton of ice cream only to find it sitting in the freezer for the family to enjoy and me to just look at! I'd treat myself to a DQ, Baskin Robbins or TCBY!!

Enjoy!

Hi Joanna,

Well, Mary has already pretty well covered the subject. The only thing I can think of to add, is that Breyer's vanilla ice cream is not only gluten free, but also lactose free. If I remember right, it might even be corn free, but better check the label to be sure. The reason I know it's lactose free, is because I used it to confirm my suspected casein intolerance. Of course some frozen yogurts are almost as good as ice cream.

Happy eating. I'll be thinking about you--I still miss ice cream.

Love,
Wayne

WOW! Great info in this thread. Mary, you are a wealth of info - so glad to have you back!

The very best non-dairy dessert is Sharon's coconut sorbet! It is rich and creamy just like real ice cream. If you ever see it , grab some! Unfortunately, it does have corn syrup and carrageenan, so I can no longer eat it. But it is GF/DF/SF/EF and wonderful!

Love,

Polly

Wow, is right. Who woulda thunk?

I had no  that there were this many safe and GF ice cream products out there. Mary, thank you for all the product information- Your right about just treating myself to a TCBY, rather than buying a carton of something. I'll take Lannie out for ice cream this week and maybe pick up some Dreyers for the home freezer. Shannons coconut sorbet sounds delicious...I'll look for that too.

Joanna,

Check out the "delphi forums celiac site"; they have a long list of gf dairy products, including many ice creams. I posted the link in our links room.

Here in Ohio, I use Edy's slow churned, because it has 1/3 the calories and 1/2 the fat of their regular ice cream. It's very good.
