Hummers!

Post by annie oakley »

Well we put the hummingbird feeder up and 30 min later we had a hummer visit. This is the time for their migration thru the Concho Valley. It was exciting for me. Mike will put the other feeder up next weekend. He's tuckered out from all that Barn Building. The birds have been eating the wild bird seed mix I put out. I love the birds Love Oam

That must be one happy hummingbird! We were at my parents yesterday and Geoff and my parents and I were all standing in a rough circle, and all of a sudden something whirred in and then flew off. Yup, hummer. As Dad says, it seems like they could buzz right through you if they wanted. We think he was on his way to a particular patch of mom's garden and we were in the flight path.

Enjoy the birds. Feeders bring such a variety close enough for us to enjoy. Great fun.

Oooooh, I love hummers too. Mine prefer flowers to feeders and especially like red bee balm and garden phlox. I stopped the feeders because all they attracted were ants! LOL!

This past week has been so much fun watching the squirrels and chipmunks climb up the sunflower stalks and devour the seeds. Of course, the goldfinches are giving them a run for their money!

Love,

Polly

Hi Oma,

I hope you'll lots of time to watch your hummingbird feeder. Here in Ohio we only have one kind of hummingbird, the Ruby throated, but you might have lots of species. When we have been in Arizona we've seen many different kinds and it is so much fun just to sit in a chair and watch them come and go from the feeders. Maybe Texas is like that too. Here it is still fun but the only variety is male, female, and juvenile, which looks just llike female.

It sounds like Mike got a lot accomplished this weekend. Yea, Mike!

Yep he got alot done...he's cranky tho. I had him put the feeder out on a high tree limb, the ants may not be able to get it. Love Oma

OMA! No wonder he's cranky! Won't he have to take the feeder down every 2-3 days to put fresh sugar solution in it? LOL!!!

Love,

Polly

I love hummers too and I have a tip for the ant problem. One year we had a lot of ants and I coated about 1/4 inch of the wire the feeders were hanging from with a thick coat of vaseline. The ants couldn't cross it. That was the only year we had a problem with ants. Don't know why.
