Polly,
I haven't posted much because of an illness from which I am recovering very slowly, but I follow the board almost every day.
I wanted you to know how much I feel your sadness. It's an unutterable blessing and a profound challenge to be loved so unconditionally, and to have to let the physical presence of that love go for good. Rusty's spirit is with you forever.
We are just now in the same position with our dog Maggie and have lost our other two goldens in the last five years. It's always just unbearably hard.
My heart is with you.
Susan

oh polly I am so so so sorry about your dog!! I know so well how you must feel. I experienced the same about 15 years ago, when my astor (also a dark color golden retriever) passed away on his almost 13th birthday. Also not a natural dead, but with a little help of the vet. It is just so awful, one moment your dearest dog, your best friend is still with you and the next moment he or she is gone. My heart goes out to you (and the rest of your family), I know how sad you must be now.
It makes my cry reading your message.
Let's hope rusty is in dog heaven now.

Polly,
So sad to hear your news about Rusty. I know how hard it was for you to let him go, but you are right - he let you know he was ready.
My thoughts are with you.
Love,
Mary Beth

Polly, I am so sorry for your loss, and also for being so long in extending my sympathies. I understand how you feel...a couple of yrs ago I had to let my 16 yr old 'fur baby' Kelsy go...it just broke my heart
My vet is also my neighbor and he was kind enough not to have me take her to the office...she passed away peacefully with his assistance in my kitchen...I held her the entire time until her last breath. She was very sick and nothing the vet had done was helping and she finally went into liver failure...that day was awful and still makes me cry, but i thought that she had loved me for 16 yrs no matter what, so I had to love her enough to let her go and end her pain.
Our pets are family members and losing them is so hard and heartbreaking...you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs, Memory

Oh, Polly,
I am so very sorry. Remember just 18 months ago we lost Ginger, our golden. You helped me through that with your kind words. I know you will never forget Rusty and all the love he gave you. We still have Ginger's son, Prince, but he will be 11 on Sept. 11 and we can see him slowing somewhat. I dread that day like you just experienced but I know it will come. I couldn't even read the beautiful poems the others wrote because of the tears. I'll go back later and read them. Hang in there it will get easier.
