Yup, we do! Even call it that, too. We were down in Sandpoint Idaho on Saturday and were surprised to find out that you guys celebrate it too! We thought it was only "our" holiday :-)

Naty it started in the late 1800's with a labor union in New York city as a holday to celebrate the laborer. It was adopted as federal holiday in 1894 by president Grover Cleavland as a conciliatory move to assuage the labor groups after a clash with US marshals (federal police) and military forces over the Pullman strike that resulted in labor union members deaths.

Anyway that's the history, now its an excuse for a long weekend, a chance to cook on the grill and generally relax with a few drinks and some good friends. It is also considered the un-official end of summer.

Thanks for asking Naty

Even us aussies get a labour day holiday (first monday in May)

straight from wikipedia
Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Yes, here in Canada I bet most people have no idea why it's even called Labour day.. it is just the last holiday weekend of the summer, and before school starts, to them.
