What About Margarine Like This?
While I was at the HF store this afternoon, I happened to check out the refrigerated and frozen stuff, (picked up some Van's waffles, since I tested negative to soy), and I noticed something I was unaware of--margarine made from Safflower Oil. They also had Soybean Oil Margarine, (which I passed on), and they said they usually stock Canola Oil Margarine, but were currently out.
Outside of a little soy, the label on the Safflower Oil Margerine looks good, no natural flavorings, and that sort of thing, and no corn, gluten, or dairy. I'm gonna give it a try--my taters have been pretty dry since I cut out all that stuff about 6 or 8 months ago.
Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I assume you are jealous in that the two of of us not only react to rice but have recognized that oils are also a problem. At this point olive oil is the only thing I use. The Pamela’s GF cookies all contain either butter or other oils so along with the rice it is a kind of double whammy for me. Was just thinking that I have changed the way I cook and eat so that I have no idea what I would use margarine for anyway. From what I have been able to read I don’t quite understand the problem since the fat in chicken and pork do not seem to be a problem. Its just nice to have discovered it some time back and have learned to eat without . Like almost everything else you can find great long learned essays on why margarine is not a good idea anyway. I am a bit lost in that if you believed everything you read you would just drink water and then find that that can be bad for you to.
I found this neat little pump sprayer that you fill with olive oil. It avoids the problem of being half asleep in the morning and putting to much in the pan. Don’t want to sound to negative in that the “close to the vine “ foods that I eat cooked with interesting spices is still very enjoyable. In fact I seem to thrive on it.

Matthew,
It is amazing how many things we learn to do without.....and actually enjoy eating in the process. I have come to the point where I don't use any margarine or many oils either. I do use olive oil (but now we have to watch out that it isn't aldultered - did you see the post about that?) and I also like to use walnut oil as a salad dressing. Basically, I feel best when I eat unprocessed foods. And I have eliminated almost all of them from my diet. We MUST be much healthier, doncha think?

Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Matthew,
Just for the record, Pamela's PB cookies do not contain any oil, (other than what might be in the peanuts), but they do contain rice syrup. You are right about the others, though. The Ginger Cookies, for example, contain safflower oil.

In the traditional cookie line the Carob Hazel nut, Chocolate Chip Walnut, Chunky Chocolate Chip and Ginger Cookies all contain Safflower Oil.
In the organic cookie line they all contain Palm oil or Safflower oil.
Many of them contain Soy Lecithin and citric acid that I also avoid.

Matthew,
Exactly. That's why I no longer eat anything but the PB cookies in that product line.
I've never determined for sure whether I have a problem with Safflower oil, (or most of the other oils, for that matter), but it's not an obvious problem for me, if it exists. Do you actually react to them, or do you just avoid all the oils as a matter of principle, (since they're not particularly good for us, anyway).
I find myself changing my mind frequently about them, because I get inconclusive results so often when I test them. For example, peanuts were the first thing that I eliminated from my diet, about 5 or 6 years ago, but now I find that peanut oil, at least, doesn't cause any problems for me, and I use it even more than olive oil, (for fried chicken, and fish, for example).

Matthew,
I'm with you and what you said. Have you tried any extra light olive oil? I like it because it doesn't add the olivey taste to things, like eggs. I have a liter of both on had at all times.
You're right, I don't have any idea what I'd do with margarine. I never liked it anyway. I think it's just nice to be able to eat something.
Have you tried rice since you found your intolerance to it? I've been mulling over the idea of trying some just to see. I haven't been brave enough though (or had 2 days to spare). I figure it was the last one I found so I may be able to reintroduce it at some point...

I am with you on the interesting question of oils. When I was so sick and then finally got Dr. Fines test results that showed fat malabsorbtion I cut way back on oils and fats of any kind for a month because in the state I was in I could not help but think that they were adding to the D problem. Looking back my kind of informal fast was a good learning tool. When I decided to try it again the only oil I had at the time was canola oil and I was convinced that the sudden increase of D when I tried it was do to the oil. This was no double blind test but some time later when I was at my sisters and the only oil they had was canola oil the same thing happened. I also had an episode with coconut oil but that happened because I changed brands. This was much later in my recovery when I had come to some level of stability and it was the only thing that I had changed. It really did a number on me and then I was bright enough to try it again later and it did the same thing. I am afraid the jury on peanuts is still out. I am not really sure that when I have tried them that I have had an uncontaminated source but in the mean time I recognize them as a possible problem and thus have not tried peanut oil . Never having been much of a friar, pun, I don't have much of a need for a high temp oil.
Reading back over what I just wrote is not very convincing is it? In the mean time Polly, It MUST be much healthier.
Jean
Yes, I like the light olive oil for things like eggs. I spray the pan with a little oil, crack in the eggs, add a tablespoon of water, cover and steam them to the way I like them. They really taste like eggs that way instead of oil or fat. Polly’s post on rice tortillas gave me a craving for a good buritto, something I really miss even if I would have to leave off the cheese. I have seen nothing like it in the health food stores here. Figured their must be a reason. The whole topic of the Pamela’s cookies made me look it up all over again to convince my self that their was a reason above and beyond rice not to try them. Then I remembered . Rice might be the first thing that I might try but it has been way to hot and I have to many things I want to do to be sick right now so I will put it off. Must say it is nice to find someone that is normal the same way I am.

Matthew,
The HF store I visit knew nothing about brown rice tortillas, but they were willing to order them for me, if I agreed to buy the minimum order, (12 packages). Since there are only 6 tortillas per package, I agreed, and when they came in, they were so impressed that they told me I could buy any amount I wanted, because they were obviously an item that will sell. IOW, if you want to try them, you may have to see if they will order them for you, if they don't already stock them.
My HF store was the same way with Virgil's Root Beer, but now they stock it regularly.
The bottom line on oils is, I am completely unsure what is ok for me, and what is not, as far as reactions are concerned, but I'm very suspicious of coconut oil, (each time I've tried it, I've had problems).

Hi Lovely Family,
We are all oh-so-normal aren't we?! It is wonderful to be among others who are almost as normal as I HAHAHAHA!
I haven't noticed this room until a couple of days ago -DUH -
Just wanted to add how much I've enjoyed reading this interesting thread about oils.
Olive Oil is what I use for everything. Like Polly, I add a little walnut oil to the salad dressing. Jean, what is Light Olive Oil? What has been done to it?
Things like Pamela's Cookies are just so far from "fitting" into my eating patterns that I can't even begin to analyze the ingredient lists - I just walk right past all those GF products at the HF store; they are not for me. I will say the only line of products I have had any success with is Enjoy Life products; I eat an occasional no-oatmeal-oatmeal cookie and I have had one bag of Enjoy Life chocolate chips; I didn't react to the chocolate chips - I guess I am not chocolate intolerant after all, which is great if only I could find chocolate w/o soy in it.
Remind me to tell you about a treat I have found in the HF refrigerated area - it is almost Paleo!!!!! Made in Roswell, Georgia (Atlanta).
Love,
Karen
