Anyone shop for GF products at Wal-Mart ?
Hi everyone ! I thought I would pass along a news story I read about gluten free products at Wal-Mart ! Beginning August, over 900 "Great Value" products will be clearly labeled as gluten free - I don't know about ya'll, but I am in GF Heaven ! Below is the e-mail I sent to Wal-Mart and thier response. Happy Shopping !
Thank you for your message.

I recently read a story in the news
regarding the gluten free status of
the "Great Value" brand products. Can you
tell me if the products will be labeled as
being gluten free on the actual product, or
will this be something I need to request a
list for ? Thanks so much for making the
effort to make shopping for Celiacs a little
easier !
WOOHOO !
Love,
Carla

Sounds great Peanut
Good morning Peanut
Thats interesting----I am always in Walmarts----luv to browse around that place---the prices are usually very good---
But more importantly is the fact of the GF labeling---
Companies seem to be *realizing* the need for such a thing---
Good work on your part too---
luv Barbara

I don't get to shop there much, but I did notice the last time there, that a number of their canned fruits don't have citric acid (presumably from corn).
That's one thing I don't seem to react to, but I always try to buy the least allergenic products as I feel like the more they sell of these, the less likely they'll be to change the ingredients.
Perhaps we all should do the solidarity bit with our bro's and sis's here on the board, and buy the products with the least no. of unessential-to-the-plot additives/ingredients. If they pick up on the fact that one product sells over another version, they MIGHT realize why.
At least they'd notice a big drop in sales if they added an allergen, and maybe be motivated to revert back to the allergen free version.
Personally, I don't miss having corn in my canned pears, do any of you feel that corn's a necessary ingredient in those?
Maybe our corn intolerant/allergic friends would pay us back for doing this by avoiding foods with unnecessary soy additives.
How else could we help each other out? Anyone have any other ideas?
Hey, I think we may be witnessing the birth of another great social movement for our times. Hahaha! Whatcha think?
Yours, Luce

Thanks for the information.
I am basically and anti-Walmart shopper due to their ousting of small business when they move in but they could change now if GF products are more readily available.
Luce - thanks for the tip on canned fruit since I do buy that and I also have eliminated corn syrup due to reaction.

Hi all;
I've been browsing since I still type with only one finger (I know lots of people do that regularly, but for someone who is a speed typist, this is aggravating!)
Anyway, this afternoon I found and read this post. I shopped at Wal Mart right after reading it, and I had some extra time, so decided to browse through the food section to see what I could find. Wasn't able to find anything specifically labeled "gluten free" or "contains gluten", but did find interesting things.
First, I found "Great Value" pudding mixes that specifically stated "food starch, corn" or "citric acid, corn based" and I found many "Great Value" items using the new labeling and indicating wheat in the products. I'll keep watching and see if labeling changes as these products are moved out.
A couple of interesting things I did find: One is a cereal made by a company called "Alf" (never heard of it before I found this today). The puffed rice cereal caught my eye because the front of the bag said it was all natural without preservatives, etc. I turned it over and the one and only ingredient is brown rice! I didn't buy any, but will be keeping this in mind. Didn't think to get an address or e-mail but will probably check with the company sometime to see about the possibility of contamination because I also saw a puffed wheat they sell.
The other interesting thing was in a section of Mexican imports (I live right on the border, so these may not be available in most Wal Marts). Again, I didn't buy any, but I found a box of rice flour which was only $.97 for over a pound! I'm used to paying more than that! BUT, it had other ingredients besides just rice and it's difficult for me to tell what all of it might have been. Also, being produced in a country without an FDA (this is the main problem with meds from there - no regulation), I am even more concerned about contamination.
Just thought I'd add what I'd found
