help! emergency!!
Hi everyone, I haven't posted for awhile because I have had my cc somewhat under control. However, a few days ago I began a flare up that I just can't handle. Before this I have been able to live with flare ups by taking a few immodium but this time it is having no effect at all. I literally can't sleep or leave the house. I called my dr. and have an appointment for Nov. 8 and he can't prescribe anything until then be cause I haven't been in his office for the past twelve months. Anyway, my immediate problem is tha we have a trip planned this weekend to visit my grandson at his university. It has been planned for months and I don't think I can cancel but I dont know of any solution to this almost constant diarrhea. I fasted yesterday and that seemed to help, had very little to eat today but evidently enough to keep me in the bathroom all evening. Does anyone know of anything that might work, even total fasting I would try. I really am desperate and would appreciate any advice at all. Thanks for listening to this! Maddiegrace p.s. I have also tried pepto to no avail
Hi Maddie,
Here is what I would try:
Stop taking all supplements and check any prescribed medicines for gluten/dairy /soy. Think about stopping any prescribed medication for a few days where it is safe to do so (eg, HRT).
Drop back to a basic diet of white rice, eggs, banana's and tea. This will give as good a result as fasting, but without making you faint from lack of energy. Fasting doesn't stop the secretory D, unfortunately.
Try Immodium advanced - the only one without lactose.
Pack some Depends for the trip, and some changes of clothes and wet wipes in an 'emergency pack'. Basically be set up to deal with unexpected problems.
Good luck.

I totally reiterate what Lyn has stated above.
eat a bland basic diet, and get the lactose free imodium
as for the trip make sure you pack double the amount of meds, depends, undies and clothing that you would normally need!
if you can, take most of your own meals with you (as basic and bland as you can take)
and be super cautious of contiminants
rest, relax and try not to stress (easier said than done)

Maddiegrace,
I totally agree with the advice offered by Lyn and Gabes. As Lyn mentioned, fasting will not completely stop the D, and it can cause other problems to complicate the situation. Please don't forget that you are at risk of becoming deyhdrated, due to the D, (especially with traveling, and all the other excitement of being away from home), so be sure that you are replenishing the water your body needs, and your electrolytes. You might want to review this article by Polly, about preventing dehydration:

The main thing is to keep your diet simple, based on the foods that Lyn suggested, and free of processed foods. Hopefully, by doing this, you will be much better by the weekend.
Celie's suggestion about Pepto might be helpful. How much Pepto-Bismol did you try, and how long did you try it? The Pepto "treatment" for MC is 8 or 9 tablets per day, for 8 weeks.
Please keep us updated on how you are doing, and good luck with your treatment.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
When I was having 15 to 20 trips to the bathroom my GI doc said take as many imodium as necessary even up to 10 a day. Hope you don't need that many. Start with one or 1/2 a day then gradually increase. Don't completely plug yourself. I am not a doctor but I think it's best to go some every day.
