Breaking the V Cycle and Paleo Diet

Post by ronipow »

Just read Breaking the Vicious Cycle and The Paleo Diet this weekend.

We are going to start over without rice and stick to the fruit on SCD list.
We'll omit nuts, but leave in nut butter.

It's going to be hard. When we get the reports back on Casin allergy
will decide on Goat butter and cheeses.

Roni

This is going to be hard.

Hi Roni,

Wow  You've actually read the Paleo Diet! Is it "The Paleo Diet" by Loren Cordain? It's a great book, isn't it - easy to read and comprehend. There are quite a few people who have criticized Cordain for mainly three things that I know of; one, that his approach is low-fat and two, that he uses recipes, and finally that the book is written as a weight loss book. According to those who are critical of Cordain's version of the paleo diet none of that is in accordance with paleo lifestyle. If you find the paleo perspective interesting I recommend that you also read Ray Audette, "Neanderthin" - it is a fun, informative, and easy book with a different take on the subject from Cordain's.

I have not read Elaine Gottschall's book, "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" but I have heard much about it and read testimonies from people with Ulcerative Colitis who've gotten their life back on her diet using her book. I believe there is also a website for the SCD diet. Based on what I know I have a lot of respect for Elaine Gottschall and wish you the best using her book as a guideline.

Roni, don't be afraid of the paleo diet - I know it's going to be hard at first to make the adjustments but I actually find the paleo diet super easy and delicious. I've been on it for 4 months now (I'll tell you a secret - I don't use recipies..... YEAHHHH!).

Love,
Karen

Karen,

Her diet will have to be closer to paleo because emily is allergic to most dairy and she can't stand yogurt which is a big part of the diet. It's not any ol' yogurt. You have to make it yourself. I have been reading the website associated with the book. There is some interesting stuff.

I think the most important is the single sugar molecule(sp) is the only one
that can be digested with people with digestive disorders. So, I guess rice is not broken down the way it should be.

The website does state that if you are not allergic to casin and just lactose
intolerant than you may be able to eat hard cheese from goats. Not something I'd like to try right away. It stinks that Emily is allergic to honey, as it is one of the allowable sugars on the diet. Saccarine is ok too.
No other fake sugars allowed. I hope emily isn't allergic to eggs. Still waiting on the test from Dr. Fine. If she's not, I might incorporated them into some reciepies.

They state on the SCD diet no nuts whole until D resolves, but that nut butters are OK.

All of the diets, SCD, Paleo, Blood type and Dr. Fine all have very similar
ideas. They are just slightly different.

You eat a lot of eggs as I remember. It's hard not having the eggs.

Hi Roni,

You know I prefer to think of the Paleo diet as "the easy diet" because it's just simple real food. It's not as hard as it sounds. Love, Marsha
