Entocort and rapid weight gain?

Post by scoutfinch »

Hi All:

I've been happily D-free on Entocort for almost 7 months, and it's time to taper off. I did not gain weight for the first five months, then I put on a few in September and October, and I gained about seven pounds (10 total) in just the last few weeks. Could entocort be the culprit for the rapid gain? And do you think I will lose some quickly as I taper off?

Hi Scout, hello from New Hampshire, your almost next door neighbor...

Certainly corticosteroids can cause weight gain. From what I have read here, and personally experienced on this board has been the opposite though. I had be on Enotcort 9mg/day since last April and recently completed tapering off of it. During that time I lost a total of 41 pounds, admittedly I certainly could have stood to lose at least 25 pounds.

It also seems that several other members have had a similar experience with weight loss. I would wonder if your weight gain might be due you digestion working better and that is allowing for better absorption of nutrients and calories overall.

It is certainly possible though that you are reacting by gaining some of that weight due to the steroids, and if that is the case you will most likely loose the weight after you discontinue its use. That is a fairly typical pattern for those who take prednisone for example.

Its good to hear from you again

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
