LOL!

Now you've got me thinking about my soon-to-be pathetic Thanksgiving at my in-laws. I've been asking my FIL to make sure he gets a natural turkey with no gluten ingredients injected in it. I've also asked they not stuff the bird (this would not be the first time we cook the bird without stuffing it). But when I spoke to them on the phone this week, my MIL INSISTED that she was going to stuff the turkey, and she planned to buy me a turkey breast I could prepare separately. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? I'm driving my family 6 hours to your house to celebrate Thanksgiving, and you can't compromise on stuffing the bird for my HEALTH?!? That means no leftover turkey for me, no turkey soup, etc. and I get to make my own Thanksgiving meal as a virtual outcast?? Not to mention my opinion that she has a classic case of celiac - bloating, IBS, Hashimoto's, hives, etc.

If they can't prepare a GF turkey for my sake, I am walking out on Thanksgiving and ruining it for the rest of them!!!!!!! This is total BS!!!

I hear you. Her plan is not foolproof, anyway. The problem with her preparing a separate plain turkey breast/chicken/whatever, is that the odds are extremely high that somewhere along the line, she, (or someone else), will mistakenly touch the "safe" version after handling the dressing, (or a contaminated part of the turkey), without even thinking about what they're doing, and you will be "zapped" without them even realizing what they have done.

Your MIL is not unique - that attitude exemplifies the general attitude of most family members about relatives who have this disease. It's just a little diarrhea, so what's the big deal? They assume that Thanksgiving dinner is their project, and if they're going to go to all the trouble and expense of feeding everyone, then it is their right to set the rules, (and it is, of course). Also, from their viewpoint, why should they spoil everyone's fun, for the sake of one in-law?

I used to have a lot of arguments because of holiday meals, but I simply told everyone that I couldn't eat that stuff, and I either didn't go, or I went and didn't eat. Eventually they get used to it, (but they continue to offer me food that I can't eat - I guess they'll never really learn), but at least now they don't get upset about it, (well, not much, anyway). It's much simpler if I don't go, of course, because then I don't have to go through another round of arguments at mealtime. Of course, I have a big advantage over you, because I don't have a spouse and kids who would be more than a little disappointed at not being able to participate.

It's a tough exercise in diplomacy, because you're dealing with people who are dedicated to keeping a long-standing tradition alive, and keeping the family together, and all that good stuff, but unfortunately, they really, really don't understand our situation, because it's impossible for them to picture themselves in our shoes. Subconsciously, I suppose, they feel that such "minor" issues should be put on hold, or ignored, during the holidays, because holiday festivities, and visiting with family, should take precedence over such "trivial matters". :sigh:

I hear you too.....

Luckily my family are in the food business and like the challenge to do something nice for me.

But yesterday I got really pissed off. I was with "good" friends here in HK and had arranged to go to a Vietnamese restaurant where I knew I could survive with rice noddles and some meat or fish. Then one of the party insisted on going to a Chinese vegetarian restaurant......you can imagine..... everything was made of soy!!! They got annoyed.....I got annoyed (and I just eat some steamed rice).....

And stuffing a turkey with chestnuts and onions etc.... is delicious :???:

Wow, I hadn't thought of the cook touching the dressing and then touching the turkey. We have Thanksgiving every year with friends since all our relatives are in the Midwest or farther east. I am planning on taking a GF, LF, SF, CF dessert that both my oldest daughter and I can eat. I guess I will also plan on taking something I can eat for the meal. Thanks for the heads up!!

Gee Tex,
you are so knowledgable, never thought about touching the turkey causing a problem, but seems so logical. I am really enjoying this site and learning so much.

Wow, thats terrible that they wont accommodate you, it obvious the lack of understanding.

I am pretty blessed this year in that the meal is at our house, so I get to make a bunch of GF stuff to eat. My sister has been diagnosed with Celiac so she will be very appreciative of it.

My family was concerned that they would bring things that might make me sick, I told them not to worry that I had planned for that and will have stuff that I can eat and just bring what they wanted.

One thing that I have learned in the short time I have been on the GF diet is that even though its GF, does not mean that it will be ok with my system. I have had to do some testing to see what works and what does not.

Great thing is that my D has been gone for about three weeks and norman is visiting, I hope he plans to stay for a while.

The holiday to me is really about family and time together so thats what I plan to enjoy as well as some great GF things that I am going to make.

Hoping all have a great time with family and friends.
