Whole Grains
Morning All,
Well I just read the attached articlehttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050808/ap_on_he_me/white_wheat
and it just seems for us GFers that whole grains will be everywhere. Note the mention of corn syrup for kids.
Hope the link works.

Thanks, Kathy - that works.
Uh-oh, they are making a "fake" whole wheat bread?! Making children eat whole wheat w/o knowing that what they are getting is the yukkie brown stuff!!
The food industry is so far out on a limb, it seems. Nothing is what it proclaims to be - there is no substance left; just a make belief - grapes w/o seeds, whole wheat bread w/o wheat, milk w/o lactose, meat injected w/flavor etc etc etc.
I think it is kind of an irony that the government is pushing whole grains so hard - as we know, it may not be healthy in the first place; perhaps just a little healthier than wonder bread - which is completely devoid of nutrition to start with; just plain sugar, really.
Healthy is a relative term!
Love,
Karen

Mags,
Verrrry interesting! It sounds to me like the grain industry might be getting a little nervous with the increasing awareness that many folks do not do well with grains. And people are coming to realize that grains are just not very nutritious, like we have been brainwashed to believe. Anything that has to be enriched is not so nutritious to begin with.
Of course, WHOLE grains are preferable in that they have a much lower glycemic index, but they still have far less nutrition than other foods. Actually, it is BREAD that is being the most implicated in this new epidemic (metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity and pre-diabetes). And I'll bet agribusiness is worried because the new food pyramid has cut back significantly on "pushing" grains. If we replaced grains in our diets with fruit and veggies, we would be a lot healthier.
I've been reading a lot recently about nutrition....can you tell? LOL!
Thanks for sharing.

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Good gracious people still buy Wonder Bread and feed it to their kids!?!? I thought everyone knew better by now! I don't think my kids have even had or seen it - it's *not* tough to get kids to eat wheat/whole grain bread if that's all they are exposed to. Of course the texture is much softer now (thanks gluten ), but my kids have never had a baloney sandwich on Wonder bread - and I hope they never will!
It bugs me when the food industry feels they need to alter things to make them more palatable....fortunately one of my kids' favorite treats is fresh fruit from the farmers' market - they tried pluots this weekend and loved 'em! I've explained that the "fruit snacks" sold on the cereal aisle at the store are just candy made with a bit of juice...
Interesting!
