Andi,
I worry about liver disease because I have the autoantibodies most commonly found in autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). My doctors check my chemistries every 6 months. The moment those liver enzymes exceed normal levels, I'll be diagnosed and would have to spend my life on steroids. I've been doing everything I can to prevent that outcome, including going GF and DF. I've now learned that many celiacs develop "celiac hepatitis"...same thing as AIH. So gluten intolerance is clearly implicated in liver diseases. That said, you now have another reason to go GF, and perhaps change your diet to include meat (for your health ironically). When you see your docs, make sure they order antibody tests. Having MC means you are at risk of other autoimmune diseases. They should order an ANA, and Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibody/Anti-Actin Antibody.
I haven't yet had my blood levels rechecked since going GF 6 months. I greatly anticipate seeing those antibodies go down, if not disappear. If they don't, I'll be crushed.

Please keep us posted!

Andi,

Congratulations to you and Dave on your upcoming wedding!

Good luck with the scan. Hopefully, if it shows anything, it will be something easy to remedy.

I'm feeling fine these days - can't complain. Thanks.

Tex

P. S. I have to agree with Zizzle. If your liver enzymes are elevated, it could certainly be due to gluten damage. As Polly mentioned, gluten can damage virtually any organ in the body.

Zizzle and Tex,
Oh wow, I did not know all of that until Polly mentioned something yesterday. It is really scary. I am tired of the doctor telling me to "get over a little diarrhea" when I talk about the MC problems I have. I am curious why they dont seem to know as much as people on here do? They really do sometimes seem to be out of touch.

Zizzle,
I hope so much for you that you dont have to go on the steroids, please keep everyone posted.

Tex,
I am glad you are doing much better, I know you had some bad things a year or so again. You are too nice and too helpful to have to suffer like that. I think everyone on here is the same.

Andi

recently I had a day where i woke up with bad nausea and then vomitting, then hot an cold flushes with a headache. the two weeks prior to this happening, I had had a pretty intense couple of weeks (job interviews, long days at work etc) and I think my body was telling me to slow down.

I ate gooey rice and poached chicken and made sure i got lots of rest each night for at least a week.
it took me a couple of days to feel right again.

whether it was my body fighting something or the weeks of intensity and using adrenalin caused imbalance in my stomach who knows. it is just another way our bodies react.

Gabes,
Glad you got feeling better. My body lets me know when I do too much also. This just feels different. I am doing a lot better today, the anti-nausea pills finally kicked in. I hate having to take too many drugs but I need these for a few days.
I wont know till at least Mon. the results of the CAT scan so it will be long weekend. But I will hope for the best.
Glad to know that overall you seem to be doing pretty well.

Hi Andi, after you rule out all other medical causes for your nausea i would strongly suggest getting a EDG with biopsy of the stomach. I have collagenous gastritis and my number one symptom is INTENSE nausea. 24/7 when im having a bad flair up.

I experienced very similar symptoms early on (first 6 months) my symptoms usually had an element of pain as well, middle right side below the ribcage. One doctor was sure I had gallbladder issues - but a ctscan revealed enlarged lymph nodes near the small intestine, which quickly led my then GI doctor to tell me it was cancer. Well I am glad to say it wasn't. As near as I can say I believe it was my immune system reacting to gluten. These symptoms came and went until I went GF. I still get mild nausea from time to time, when it annoys me enough I have a real ginger soda or a half of banana and that usually helps things subside.

Delta,
I am glad it was not cancer for you. Thank you for the tips.

collagastritis84,
That is very interesting, I will definitely ask my doctor to do that if the CAT scan comes back negative.

Andi,

I don't know if you have considered that you might have a Stricture. This is a narrowing of the intestine, and could cause a bowel obstruction. This is a main cause of nausea.
I am not trying to scare you, but maybe you should see the doctor.

Here's an article about celiac disease/gluten intolerance and all the associated liver problems, including autoimmune hepatitis. For some, removing gluten is enough to reverse the condition. For others, including AIH, steroids are still necessary.

http://www.springerlink.com/content/x512780gw76078jm/

Interesting that they share the same genes:

"Autoimmune liver disorders and CD share in fact
common HLA class II haplotypes. In caucasian
population, two haplotypes have been identified as
susceptibility markers of autoimmune hepatitis: the
complex HLA A1 B8 DR3 and the haplotype HLA DR4.
Similarly, specific HLA class II antigens such as HLADR3,
particularly the HLA-DQ2 molecule and HLA DR4,
confer susceptibility to CD."

Zizzle,

Thanks, that's an excellent reference that I was unaware of.

when i have acupuncture treatments, frequently it is the liver that is under a bit of stress.

As our digestion is compromised there are larger particles going to the liver etc for filtering... similar to the go wests post the other day about gallbladder and fat absorbion, all the organs are put under a bit of extra work for a MC'er, that is what my acupuncturist believes based on how my body is reacting.
