Bad day - Battery Acid D
And of course, I need to fly tomorrow (very early too... not happy about that). This just makes my anxiety even worse. So I am pretty much fasting today except for some crock pot chicken later.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out what could have caused such a severe and sudden flare (albeit I have been muddling through in a less than remissive state). The more I go, the looser I get. From this board I have learned that dairy usually causes this. But for the entire weekend, I have been home, eating well....
Friday I had a Jimmie Johns Turkey Club w/o bread. It did have mayo on it (much to my dismay). But isn't mayo lactose free? I guess I could have experienced cross contamination...
Saturday, for lunch, I had my tried and true mixed chicken grill at olive garden. Seemed benign as usual.
I have been off Entocort for a couple weeks if not longer. Thinking of doing what Ant did and popping a few. I did break down and took a lomotil. Those used to work well for me.
Sigh.... Need some positive vibes. Very discouraged.
Rich
P.S. I am considering eliminating grains from my diet. I eat a lot of rice and it is probably time to move more toward the SCD diet. I do worry about keeping my weight up on this diet, but after a day like today, I lose more weight when I flare.

You may just now be experiencing the effects of your residual level of budesonide dropping below the threshold of therapeutic efficacy.
One never knows about mayonnaise in restaurants, since some include starches, especially low-fat versions. Virtually all of them contain eggs, of course, in case they are a problem. I have no idea whether anyone might add a dairy ingredient, but I suppose it's not impossible.
I hope you can get past it pronto.

Hey Rich-
Greetings from a snowy day in Colorado.
Sorry you are having problems. It is sometimes hard to figure out.
A large percentage of commercially made mayonnaise contains soy oil. Something that many members have found they react to. Even the jars in health food stores and supermarkets that say olive oil mayonnaise still contain a percentage of soy oil in my experience. I reacted to soy the same way I reacted to dairy. Battery acid D.
Just a thought you might consider pursuing.
Any restaurant is an accident waiting to happen for me. I have discovered over the years that cross contamination is always a possibility so am very circumspect even in places I have eaten before. I understand that is not always possible for you and admire how well you work with it.
I do not know anything about Entocort since I have never taken any medication for MC.
Your Idea of going grain free is something that made an incredible difference in my health. SCD has some great guide lines. I also, like Polly and others, recommend Cordain’s “The Paleo Diet” and the “Paleo Diet Cookbook” to get you started on a grain free diet if you choose to go that route. Not to say that every thing listed in the Paleo Diet will work for everyone but by doing my own adaptation based around what I had found I could and could not eat, being careful about quantities and getting creative it was a great starting point to eating well.
Hope this helps.
Love
Matthew

Rich,
I agree with Tex; you are probably experiencing problems now because the residual amount of Entocort (or it's impact) is not enough to keep the D at bay. Only rarely do we see a change immediately after reducing the dosage. It usually takes a couple of weeks or longer.
My suggestion would be to go back on Entocort and reduce it very gradually until you feel you have things well under control. I don't know what insurance coverage you have, so staying on it may not be an option.
You likely need to eliminate some other trigger foods from your diet.

Not that I know enough to say anything, really, but I wonder about the cross-contamination in the mayo. My family always scrapes the excess off the knife on edge of the jar, which of course contaminates the mayo. We have a squeeze bottle now, but I don't know how restaurants dispense mayo on sandwiches.
Major bummer about the D, Rich. I am very sorry to hear this.
I, too, am tending toward the SCD. I'd like to go paleo, but cheese (lactose-free) is an important protein source for me and has been almost all my life. Perhaps SCD as prep for paleo...
Matthew, thanks for talking about the difference going without grains did for you. I wonder about all the rice I've been eating, if perhaps I am starting to react to it.
Rich, let us know how you are doing, especially since you are traveling.

Morning Rich,
Sorry to hear you were going the battery acid route. I too might suspect the mayo as others have said and think the elimination of Entocort might also be helping it along.
Do you this passed for you before you traveled.
Love, Maggie

Hello rich;
Sorry to hear you're symtomatic again. Not much to add to what others have suggested as to why you might be experiencing this, except that I would tend to think it might be the effects of the Entocort wearing off AND possibly an as-yet unidentified food intolerance that the entocort was protecting you from feeling.
Since you are travelling today, if I were you I'd take some entocort!
Hope things straighten out again soon,
Best Wishes,
Linda

Rich,
Sorry to hear about the D. I know the battery acid feeling That has always been associated with eating one of my sensitivities. Eating out is tricky and you may never know what is was that casued the problem. I can only imagine that Jimmy John's isn't the most cautious in avoiding cross contamination. Most mayo is soy based as others have pointed out. The Ojai Cook Lemonaise is made from canola, but it does have cornstarch, eggs and xanthan gum (could contain soy).
Hoping your flair is over soon.
Hugs,
Mary Beth

Now that's bad news, but not surprising. I hope that Subway doesn't use Sysco mayo on their new GF sandwiches.
Thanks for the insight.

Hi Rich,
So sorry to hear you're having trouble again. I know the feeling of dread that comes along with a flare only too well, and having to travel on top of it must be really tough.
As you may know, I had MRT testing done for food sensitivities (it tests for 150 foods and chemicals) and got my results back on December 18. Since dropping all the foods identified as "reactive" from my diet, I have been feeling well for the first time in 11 years, and have "Normans" regularly. It is a relatively inexpensive test ($295), and easy to do. The only food on the "low reactive" list that I've had trouble with is quinoa, so I'm not currently eating any grains.
Based on my experience, I would highly recommend this test for anyone who is struggling to figure out their "trigger" foods. I'm working with a dietitian to develop a healthy diet based on the results of the test, and will post a more detailed update on my progress soon. I'm not sure if you can order the test directly from the lab, or wether you have to go through a dietitian. Mary Beth knows much more about this than I, since she uses this test in her practice. I'm sure she'll be happy to advise you should you choose to do this.
Hope your flare is back under control by now.
Love,
Kari

Kari,
That's wonderful news! I'm so glad you are feeling better and that LEAP is working for you. The reaction to quinoa is due to a problem with lectins as MRT can't identify those.
For general info on MRT go to the company website at www.nowleap.com I'd be happy to answer any questions or help you locate a dietitian who does this in your area.

Ok my friends,
It seems unanimous that mayo is a no no. And I knew that deep in my soul :)
Per Gloria, I am have added one Entocort a day back into my regime (the generic stuff from overseas... bought a gross of that stuff a few months back).
And this being one of my literal "weeks from hell", i.e. 3 cities this week (planes, trains, automobiles), I did pretty well.
I still have a functional problem too, but it does appear that one Entocort per day is a decent balance for me at the moment. And, of course, never eating mayo again.
Thanks for the positive vibes. They seemed to work!
