Hello Gabes Everyone.,

I posted this as a reply but I think it got lost as there were nearly 500 replies, so here it is again.

I hope that you are still Ok. It has been a terrible tragedy, almost unbelievable. We were cut off for a few days but Ok even with the king tides.

Our Nephew lives on the Beachmere road & the water was about 3 feet up there & he had to get out. He & his family are staying with his brother. I have never seen the water up so high in that area before. Caboolture & Morayfield were in a bad way.

We had an emergency phone call to go immediately to higher ground which was impossible as there is no high ground in our town & we couldn't get out if we wanted to.

This is a link to some photos from the floods.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/slideshowaja ... .slideshow

Thousands of people are going to the areas which were, or still are, under water to help. The response to calls for help & the generosity of people is wonderful to see.

They have turned up in their thousands with shovels, brooms, buckets, gurneys, end loaders, anything that would be of use to clear the mess.

NSW, Victoria & Tasmania are having problems with flooding. It looks as though 2011 will be a year to remember. It is going to take a very long time, even years for some people to recover from this.

I am so pleased you are ok. my friend lives at beachmere and she was marooned there for days.

i am feeling very grateful and blessed that what Toowoomba incurred was mostly water based, there is not so much of the slimey smelly mud, there is silt but not the mud.
my neighbour was lucky, they replaced all her carpets on Friday, so there is no more smell.

there are still army and navy helicopters flying around alot up here with the focus on Grantham and Murphys creek, and the helicopter squadron based 20 mins away. Ironically i used to hear them every day when i worked in brisbane and i was fine, at the moment i shiver a bit everytime i hear them as they are a reminder of the intensity and death that has occurred.

hope things return to normal soon, (whatever normal is!) keep well

Dear Liz,

Thank heavens you are safe and I am sure it was a terrible ordeal and so hard to see what your countrymen/women and the land itself is enduring.

My prayers are with all of you.

Love, Maggie

Hello again,

You are right about the smell Gabes. Grantham was & still is thevreal tragedy here. The death toll so far is 20, 18 from the lockyer Valley & still about 10 unaccounted for. It looks as though the whole of the east coast is going to cop it with parts of NSW, Tassie & Victoria having problems. It looks as though it not going to stop any time soon either.

Which part of Beachmere does your friend live in? Hope she fared Ok as lots of properties had flooding. People were coming down to the beach near our house to get sand. There was one home in Belay road that has problems every time we get a lot of rain so I expect that they were well under this time.

This website is amazing, very clever.

It shows before & after photos of different areas of Brisbane. You just move the line over.
Cheers

Hi Wayne,

There are still thousands of people who can't get back into their homes, that's if they still exist or are habitable. Many still do not have elecricity.

There is a posibility that my internet connection will go out for a period. Noy too sure. They will give notifation if & when this happens. The company has ben very generous in starteing up a relief fund & waiving fees in some instances.

In areas where customers are unable to return to their homes due to severe damage, customers will have access to benefits which we hope will make the situation a little easier:

* Cancellation, without penalty, of the fixed line service and reservation of the customer's telephone number for a period of 3 months.
* Free connection to alternative premises/accommodation while a customer's home is uninhabitable.
* Cancellation, without penalty, of any broadband or Dialup internet service.
* Free installation of any ADSL internet service at the customer's new premises within a 12 month period and continuation of existing contract (where relevant and with no penalty).

Love Liz

Liz,
my friend lives on the water in Coronation Av (or ?St). at the best of times she already feels a bit isolated living there as the rest of us were brisbane based, to then have the roads cut.

Things have improved here in the T-bar, sweet potato and potatos are now back in stock! the post is caught up and my order of Bonvita chocolate arrived , it should have been here last Tuesday, my stock ran out on the weekend.

this is not the case for people 30 mins away and there are constant reminders of that situation here in Toowoomba. The community, the state, even the world are pitching in and doing everything they can for those that lost everything other than the clothes they were wearing.

Thanks for posting that site, Liz.

If you go to "larger map" (little icon above each photo) for any of those images you get to nearearth. Then you can type in any address (or just street or suburb) and zoom right in.

Using that we could see the mud in the swimming pool of the house we lived in at Corinda, and exactly how far up the steps it went (nearly a foot less than I expected). Amazing pictures.

My brother only got power back at his shop late friday, and as of yesterday still didn't have power at home. His suburb is listed as 'indefinite' for restoring power. Guess that means the substation got badly wet. Bet he is getting tired of the cold showers and having to boil the kettle on the BBQ for a cuppa. He can't get milk anyway (the main processing plant flooded), so guess he's getting used to black coffee!

Work got power yesterday, but the lifts and air conditioning aren't going, so only a few people are allowed back in the building before Monday. They had to pump around 20 Olympic sized swimming pools worth of water out of the basement.

A friend of mine also got caught in Victoria. Evacuated from Halls Gap when that flooded, the trip to Ararat was taking so long at 1am they decided to stop at a motel - in Beaufort. From where they were told to leave early the next morning. They ran into the Motel owner later and the Motel went under when Beaufort flooded.

On the up side, all the people volunteering to help is amazing. They have to turn them away in places, there are too many!!

La Nina is busy this year.

It is going to be a very long time befotre some people's lives are back to normal, if ever.
Lyn, I hope things improve for you & your brother.

Parts of Victoria is having a torrid time of it. I have friends down that way & am hoping that they are OK. Will try to contact them today.

Gabes, a lot of the properties that go through from Bishop Rd to the beach were flooded. That has always been a problem for them when it rains heavily. Most have built up their driveways but that was not much help this time. We used to own one of those blocked & we put tons of fill in but it was still under.

Cheers

Lyn and Liz
thinking of you both and your friends and family in Victoria.

i saw on the news that things were going well in and around brisbane except for that damn storm last night..... hope things continue to improve on that front as well

the small amount of rain we had up here last night there was flash flooding again pretty quickly as the ground is still really wet. fingers crossed the current weather doesnt dump big amounts of rain
