I have never seen this statement before about that association, does anyone know anything more about that? There have also been reports of an association between collagenous colitis and lymphoma.

I was just doing more reading and research and found this statement about microscopic colitis.

Yeah, I think it may have been mentioned elsewhere on the forum that there is a debate over LC and CC being the same thing, only being different stages of MC.

Gah, for some reason it won't let me edit my posts, i meant to say with the above post, that the link is to where there has been a discussion about LC and CC.

That association probably refers to the link between MC and celiac disease, (IOW, gluten-sensitivity), because celiacs have an elevated risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, if their sensitivity is not treated, (by diet changes). After several years, though, (IOW, after their gut completely heals), that increased risk of lymphoma disappears.IDreamInColor wrote:I was just doing more reading and research and found this statement about microscopic colitis.

Actually, I'm not aware of any valid research that proves that association with lymphoma, for MC. IOW, some researchers/doctors assume it to be true, because of the association between MC and celiac disease. The risk is probably overstated, for anyone following a GF diet, because the risk will slowly decline, as the gut heals. Also, research shows that asymptomatic celiacs, (IOW, celiacs who do not show any clinical symptoms), do not have an elevated risk of lymphoma, even though they may test positive for the laboratory markers of celiac disease, (such as a positive celiac blood test, or villus atrophy). Therefore, once we are in remission, that risk quickly fades away.
Also, we have many hundreds of members, but not a single one has ever reported a case of lymphoma. We certainly hope that trend continues.

From Cancer Watch
Celiac Disease and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Celiac disease, a common chronic intestinal disorder, if untreated can cause lymphoma. The symptoms of the disease are atypical and not always diagnosed correctly.

As I have mentioned somewhere, I strongly suspect that my father has celiac, or close to it because of all his intestinal-related issues that I remember from growing up, and his lactose intolerance. Once when I was in high school he couldn't even go vote (a major trauma for him) because his diarrhea was so bad. He made it to the car, but had to come back in.
He is undergoing Retuxin treatment right now for B-cell Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. My mother also had lactose intolerance, and also had indolent NH lymphoma before she died of congestive heart failure. I suspect, since she had rheumatoid arthritis and depression that she was also a celiac, or close to it.
So, am I adamant about staying away from gluten? You can ding-dang betcha.

My father underwent his second of four Rituxan treatments in this cycle for his lymphoma yesterday. In the pre-treatment IV cocktail, Prevacid was substituted for the usual Zantac. The diarrhea hit him before he left the hospital, and he had a very bad night between that and the gallons of water that he had to drink because of the IV Benadryl.
Would you consider his reaction to the PPI to be circumstantial evidence that my father also has microscopic colitis? At 87, I am sure he would not consider having a colonoscopy, just as he won't consider talking to his oncologist about the radio-labeled treatments for his lymphoma that Rich told us about.

What a bummer, to say the least.Marliss wrote:The diarrhea hit him before he left the hospital,
Of course the label lists both C and D as possible side effects, and I'm pretty sure that most doctors would say that his reaction was simply a coincidence, but as circumstantial evidence goes, that's pretty strong evidence that he might at least be vulnerable to drug-induced MC, IMO.Marliss wrote:Would you consider his reaction to the PPI to be circumstantial evidence that my father also has microscopic colitis?

Pat, I strongly doubt it, but this summer when I see him I might be able to talk to him about it at some point. It is amazing to me what discomfort he will put up with. But then I'm a baby boomer, and you know what they say about baby boomers. We will be the healthiest people in history, lying in the hospital dying of nothing.
