Has anyone here taken a drug called Elavil?

Post by IDreamInColor »

I made it to my doc appt today, I made a huge dufus of myself and cried thru the whole appointment. The depression is pretty bad. You all know that I went off the ssri's due to the connection of ssri's and MC. The doctor was going to write me another prescription for another ssri, but I told her about the possible connection with ssri's and mc, so she wrote me a script for one called Elavil.

She said Elavil may even help with the D,...so I'm wondering if anyone here has taken Elavil and did it in fact help with the D?

I'm such a wimp when it comes to taking new meds, always too many side effects, I'm afraid to take it.

Idream,

I have taken Elavil for neuropathic pain (low doses in the 5 to 15 mg range at night). And Yes, it does slow down your motility. It also makes you very groggy so take it early in the evening because the effects linger well into the next morning.

I also find that now, because my motility is so confused, that it could stop me up pretty solidly (something to watch for).

Regards,

Rich

Hi,
Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant used for treating depression, but in lower doses it is also used to treat pain, as Rich stated.
If I'm not mistaken it can go either way as far as side effects where the diarrhea or constipation are a concern as far as side effects.

Hi,

I took Elavil for about 4 years for depression and to help me sleep. It did not seem to help the D for me. They changed me to Cymbalta when I became so depressed I thought it would be easier to not live then to live with this disease. I was undiagnosed at the time. I like you cried thorugh my whole appointment I am surprised they did not admit me. The Cymbalta has helped. I also was babtized Dec 13, 2009 and that helped to be able to deal with things to. I can always turn to the Lord when I can't take it anymore.

I would try the Elavil. You can always stop if you react badly. People like us with MH issues really have no option than to try something.

Good luck
Sharon
